The purpose of this video is educational; to document a traditional market, regional cooking methods, and the cultural context behind a dish that many outside the region may never encounter.
The king cobra is the world’s longest venomous snake and has long been one of the most recognizable reptiles in Asia. In parts of southern China, it has also historically been viewed through a culinary lens, with snake dishes appearing in regional cooking traditions for generations.
In this video, we visit Sanzhou Market in Shunde, China, one of the region’s traditional wet markets, to document how a king cobra purchased at the market is prepared and ultimately cooked into three different dishes.
Shunde is widely regarded as one of China’s great culinary centers, known for ingredient-driven cooking and traditional preparation techniques. While snake consumption may be unfamiliar to many viewers, this video offers a closer look at how local food customs continue to be practiced and preserved.
As always, Travel Thirsty aims to document real food traditions from around the world through observation and cultural exploration.
