Composed in 1950 by Salvatore d’Esposito with lyrics in Neapolitan dialect by Domenico Titomanlio, this international hit has been recorded in many languages. This lovely recording was made in 1958. The added subtitles are mostly fragments from the most popular English version. They are not literal translations and not meant to be. Italian actress Pier Angeli appeared in several Hollywood productions in the early 1950’s. She had an affair with Kirk Douglas and a serious romantic relationship with James Dean before marrying Vic Damone in 1954. It is purported that she broke up with Dean upon the insistence of her mother and that she later stated Dean had been the love of her life.
