Grace Kelly became a princess through her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The couple first met in 1955 when Kelly, an American actress, was invited to participate in a photo shoot with the prince during the Cannes Film Festival. The photo shoot was arranged by the Paris Match magazine, and the pictures of the two together were soon published in newspapers and magazines around the world.

After the photo shoot, Prince Rainier invited Kelly to a reception at the palace in Monaco. The two quickly hit it off, and they began exchanging letters and telegrams. In December of 1955, Prince Rainier visited Kelly in the United States, and they spent time together in New York City and Philadelphia. After a year-long courtship, the couple announced their engagement in January of 1956, and they were married in April of that same year.
