唐琴の瀬戸は細い海峡で、潮の流れが速く、古くから船人たちを見守り続けた要所です。
江戸時代からの航路標として建てられた古い燈籠堂は、船人たちの安全を願った歴史の象徴です。
17世紀には朝鮮通信使がこの港を訪れ、徳川将軍への使節団として文化交流が行われました。
使節団は港町の本蓮寺に宿泊したこともあり、牛窓の町は歴史的な舞台となりました。
毎年11月には朝鮮通信使行列などを再現する「瀬戸内牛窓国際交流フェスタ」が賑やかに開かれます。
