I recorded the scenic beauty of Ittohyo Chinka-bashi (Submersible Bridge) and the “Wooden Log Koinobori” in the upper reaches of the Shimanto River, Japan.
In the past, this area in Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku flourished with agriculture and forestry, using the river as a vital artery to transport high-quality timber like the famous Shimanto Cedar.
Among the 196km of the Shimanto River, this upper reach is filled with natural energy, where the clearest waters wind through the mountains.
Clouds reflect on the mirror-like surface of the river as the clear stream flows endlessly, while eternal time passes quietly in the deep greenery.

A Chinka-bashi is a simple and functional bridge designed to submerge during floods, intentionally omitting railings to prevent damage from drifting debris.
Among the 60+ such bridges on the Shimanto, Ittohyo, built in 1935, is the oldest and is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The footage captures three bridges: the historic Ittohyo Chinka-bashi (Submersible Bridge), the modern Upper Shimanto Bridge, and the Shimizugase Chinka-bashi (Submersible Bridge) downstream.

In Japan, there is a tradition of flying “Koinobori” (Carp Streamers) in May for Children’s Day, wishing for the healthy growth of children.
Inspired by the legend of a carp climbing a waterfall to become a dragon, it carries a prayer for children to live strongly and overcome any hardship.
To pass down local history, elementary school students handcrafted these “Wooden Log Koinobori” using locally sourced Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) thinnings.
Each log is vibrantly colored by the children’s imagination; now infused with soul, these carps swim gracefully upon the pure river surface.
Swimming tirelessly in the constant stream, these wooden carps represent children moving boldly toward the future, unyielding to any adversity.

    日本最後の清流・四万十川の上流、高知県四万十町にある一斗俵沈下橋（いっとひょう）と「丸太の鯉のぼり」の風景を記録しました。
    かつてこの流域は、豊かな四万十杉を運ぶ林業や農業が盛んで、川は人々の暮らしと物流を支える大動脈としての役割を担っていました。
    全長196kmの四万十川の中でも、ここは最も澄んだ水が山間を縫うように流れる、自然のエネルギーに満ちた上流域です。
    鏡のような川面に映る雲と、絶え間なく流れる清流。四万十の深い緑に包まれて、悠久の時が静かに流れていきます。

    沈下橋とは、増水時にあえて水に浸かり、流木による損壊を防ぐため欄干を排したシンプルかつ機能的な橋です。
    四万十川にある60以上の沈下橋の中で、この「一斗俵沈下橋」は1935年建設の現存最古の橋で、国の登録有形文化財に指定されています。
    映像には上流の一斗俵沈下橋、近代的な四万十上流大橋、そして下流の清水ヶ瀬沈下橋と、時代を象徴する3つの橋が映し出されます。
    春の訪れを告げる燕たちが軽やかに舞い、四万十の爽やかな季節を彩ります。

    日本では5月の「端午の節句」に、子供の健やかな成長を願い「鯉のぼり」を飾る伝統があります。
    「鯉が滝を登って龍になる」という伝説のように、困難に立ち向かい、力強く生きてほしいという切なる願いが込められています。 

    地域の歴史を繋ぐため、地元の小学生たちは毎年、地元産のヒノキの間伐材を使い、手作りの丸太の鯉のぼりを製作しています。
    子供たちが一本一本の丸太に自由な発想で色彩を施し、魂を吹き込まれた鯉たちは、今、清らかな川面へと放たれ優雅に泳いでいます。
    絶え間ない清流の中で懸命に泳ぐ丸太の鯉のぼりは、どんな困難にも屈せず、子供たちが力強く未来へ突き進む姿そのものです🎏

    It feels like a work that beautifully conveys the atmosphere of a quiet countryside village and the peace of a spring day. In particular, the Chimkagyo, a low bridge crossing the river, and the log-shaped carp flags swaying as if floating in the sky create a unique ambiance.
