This time, I stayed for several nights at Tajima Honkan, a 170-year-old traditional “touji” (therapeutic hot spring retreat) in Kagoshima where cats live freely. In Myoken Onsen, many ryokan are home to cats. It is said that this small hot spring town has one of the highest “cat densities” in Japan.
I walked slowly with the cats and spent quiet hours in my room, gazing at the river flowing outside. At night, in the dining hall warmed by floor heating from the hot spring, the cats gathered around. While absentmindedly watching them, I was gently welcomed into conversations with other guests.
For generations, people have come here to rest and heal in the mineral waters — and that quiet culture of “touji” still remains today. Strong mineral baths, slow air, and cats living gently within the rhythm of this old hot spring town.

今回は、鹿児島・妙見温泉にある猫たちが暮らす170年以上の歴史を持つ湯治宿「田島本館」に連泊しました。多くの旅館に猫が暮らす妙見温泉は、“猫密度”が全国トップクラスとも言われているそうです🐱 猫たちとゆっくり散歩をしたり、川を眺めながらお部屋で静かに過ごしたり。夜は、温泉の床暖が入った食堂で猫たちをぼんやり眺めながら、他の宿泊者の方のお話に混ぜていただいた時間もありました。何世代にもわたり、人々はこの鉱泉で体を休め、癒すために訪れてきました。そんな“湯治”の文化はいまも静かに息づいています。
力強い温泉と、ゆったりと流れる空気。古い湯の町のリズムの中で、猫たちと過ごす時間に心から癒されました。

Brings back fond memories of my homestay with my host family ❤ What a peaceful and quiet and hidden spot the inn is located in 🤩 How adorable and cute are all those cats?! 🐈 😻🥹 These feline furry friends are so funny with each other 😹 It’s one thing to run away from a human but when they do it to each other it’s more funny 😹 😂 Cats are so clever and sweet when they know what they want and they come up to you for pats and cuddles as if to say please fill my love tank and once they are done they just waltz off with personality and all sassy 🤣 The scenery around the inn is pretty too and very relaxing. Just watching you go for a walk with the cats immediately made me feel all chilled out and the stress melt away. 妙見温泉、とっても懐かしいです！！ 40年ほど前は毎年のように友人と訪れていました。
当時はこんなに看板猫さんのいる温泉地ではなかったと記憶しています。
天降川(だったかな？)の流れる音が心地好いんですよね～🥰
