Alright, let’s head out to the next Michi-no-Eki. The next roadside station is Michi-no-Eki Sekijuku. (I mistakenly said Iga earlier.) Oh, it wasn’t Iga after all. The next Michi-no-Eki is… Michi-no-Eki Sekijuku. We’ll keep driving toward Kameyama. To get to Kameyama, we’ll return to the Meihan Expressway, heading uphill. Switching from the down lane to the up lane on Meihan Expressway. I made a U-turn and am now driving toward Nagoya on the Meihan Expressway. At Michi-no-Eki Iga, you can actually try Kameyama’s famous miso-yaki udon without having to go all the way to Kameyama. Definitely give it a try! The most popular souvenir there was also miso-yaki udon. On the right side, you can see Drive-in Iga. Drive-ins like that are nice alternatives to Michi-no-Eki. I’d like to stop by one sometime. We’re now entering Kameyama City! It’s about 13 minutes to the next Michi-no-Eki, Sekijuku. There are several Michi-no-Eki located quite close to each other around here. It might be more fun to take regular roads instead of the expressway to reach Kameyama. When you go with the traffic flow, you end up driving at highway speeds. Not much time to enjoy the scenery. It was chilly this morning, but now it’s getting a bit warm. The car’s thermometer shows 24°C outside. I’m taking the exit for Seki on the Meihan Expressway. Sekijuku is located along the old Tokaido route, which runs beside National Route 1. That’s correct! Now entering Route 1. Sekijuku is just 400 meters ahead. It’s located near Seki Station. There it is! We’ve arrived at Michi-no-Eki Sekijuku. I just visited Michi-no-Eki Sekijuku, and I bought three items there. First is Sekijuku’s local specialty, the Tanuki Tawara Rice Ball. And also, Sekijuku’s traditional sweet called “Shiratama.” And finally, when you think of Kameyama, it has to be miso-yaki udon — so I bought the miso sauce for it. These are the three things I got. Let’s try the Tanuki Tawara Rice Ball. Delicious! It tastes like a fried rice ball. Delicious. It’s an easy snack to enjoy, so I really recommend it. One of the things I bought at Michi-no-Eki Sekijuku was miso-yaki udon sauce. Miso-yaki udon is a famous B-grade gourmet dish from Kameyama City. You can find it not only in Kameyama but also in nearby towns. Even if you don’t eat it there, you can buy the sauce and cook it at home. That way, you can enjoy the local flavor at home. So, I bought the sauce and tried making miso-yaki udon myself. Let’s try the miso-yaki udon. It’s really good. The miso flavor reminds me of the miso katsu I ate in Nagoya. It goes perfectly with udon noodles. It’s very filling and the flavor is rich and satisfying. I’ve heard that in Kameyama, each restaurant has its own unique flavor. So if you ever visit Kameyama, be sure to try miso-yaki udon there. Next is “Shiratama.” It’s an original sweet from Sekijuku. It’s not a Michi-no-Eki original product, but it’s a local specialty from Sekijuku, so I bought some to try. It’s my first time trying it, so let’s give it a taste. It looked really soft and smooth, so I brought it along. Wow, it’s so soft. Of course, it has that sweet red bean flavor, but the moist, delicate texture is amazing. They say this sweet has been made since the Edo period. You can visit the shop in Sekijuku, and it’s also sold at the Michi-no-Eki. Definitely give it a try. Before heading to the next Michi-no-Eki, let’s take a walk around Sekijuku. There’s a free parking lot for tourists, so I’ll head there. This is the old Tokaido road. The parking area has limited space, so it might get crowded on weekends.
