毎年10月第2土曜日と日曜日、岡山県倉敷市児島琴浦地区にある鴻八幡宮（こうはちまんぐう）で例大祭が行われます。
だんじり18台と千歳楽1基が午前と午後の部に分かれ、参道の急坂（傾斜16度，長さ80メートル）を約200人から400人の氏子により、威勢良く曳き上げられます。
岡山三大だんじり祭りに数えられ、江戸時代後期から約200年の歴史を持つ祭りばやし「しゃぎり」は、岡山県重要無形民俗文化財に指定されています。
起源については不明ですが、当時の瀬戸内海沿岸には北前船が通っており、物資とともに関西の文化なども流れてきたことから、京都・大阪から伝わったとされています。
祭りばやしは5種類の楽器により、7曲が奏でられ、だんじりの動きに合わせて曲想を変え、祭りを大いに盛り上げます。
The annual festival is held on the second Saturday and Sunday of October at Kou Hachimangu Shrine in the Kotoura area of Kojima, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan.
18 “Danjiri” floats and 1 “Senzairaku” drum float take part in morning and afternoon sessions, and are pulled up the steep shrine approach — an 80-meter slope with a 16-degree incline — by 200 to 400 parishioners in a thrilling display.
The event is recognized as one of Okayama’s Three Grand Danjiri Festivals, and features the traditional festival music “Shagiri,” which dates back about 200 years to the late Edo period and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture.
While the origins of the music remain uncertain, it is believed to have been introduced from Kyoto or Osaka via the Kitamae-bune trading ships that once sailed the Seto Inland Sea, carrying not only goods but also cultural influences from the Kansai region.
The “Shagiri” music is performed using 5 types of instruments across 7 different tunes, with the rhythm and melody shifting to match the movements of the floats — heightening the energy and excitement of the festival.
