割谷は近世から記録に残る地名で、かつては上池田の大字として存在しました。上池田小学校割谷分校（分校名の変遷あり）は昭和39年（1964年）11月30日に廃止された記録があり、集落の学校機能が戦後に整理されたことが確認できます。現地では屋敷跡や石碑などが確認され、探索記録にも遺構の存在が残されています。

木谷は割谷川上流側に位置し、古文献や地籍記録に戸数や村名が残る地域です。耕地が限られる地形のため、炭焼きや副業的な木地・養蚕等の記録・伝承が見られます。

This video is a record of visiting the abandoned mountain villages of Waridani and Kidani in deep mountain areas of Ikeda Town, Fukui Prefecture. You will see ruins of homesteads, overgrown landscapes where nature is gradually reclaiming the land, the condition of the access roads, and a sense of the quiet flow of time.

Waridani is a place name documented since the early modern period; it once belonged to the administrative division of Kami-Ikeda (“Upper Ikeda”). The Waridani Branch School of Kami-Ikeda Elementary School (with some changes in its branch-school name) is officially recorded to have been closed on November 30, 1964. On-site one can observe homestead ruins and a monument, and field -exploration records confirm that there are remnants.

Kidani is located upstream along the Waridani River; historical and cadastral records preserve its village name and registers of households. Because the terrain allowed only limited arable land, there are local accounts and documents referring to small-scale supplementary livelihoods such as charcoal burning, wood crafts, and sericulture.
