Hello everyone! I’m in Nagano Prefecture! Tonight’s lodging is a rare find: salt is harvested in the mountains. I hope you’ll stay with me until the end! The lodging is approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes by car from Tokyo and 2 hours and 30 minutes by car from Nagoya Station. We’ve arrived at the lodging! Tonight’s lodging is Sanshiokan. Yanenkan is a member of the “Japan Society for Preserving Secret Hot Springs.” The lobby is bright and has a lovely atmosphere. This is the reception desk. There are a variety of crafts on display. They sell a limited selection of souvenirs, but they do have a limited selection. There’s a wine cooler in one corner of the lobby. I wonder if they’re particular about wine? Coffee, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. My room is on the second floor, so I headed up the stairs. There are guest rooms on three floors. It’s apparently a family-run establishment, and the interior is very well-maintained and clean. Tonight’s room is “Moegi.” The sink is located immediately to the left after entering the entrance. The restroom is next door. It’s a washlet-type toilet, so it’s very clean. Unusually, the towel rack is wall-mounted. Big windows! It’s very bright. There’s a large TV and an air purifier. There’s a comfortable-looking bed. A closet without a door. Personally, I love it! Security box Yukata and bath basket bag Amenity set Personalized hot spring bag Tabi socks and yukata The refrigerator is empty. Electric kettle, direct phone line to the front desk, and snacks Japanese tea set The tree outside this room’s window is a cherry blossom, and it’s recommended to stay here in spring. You can enjoy the view from the window. This room is beautifully designed. Amenities, available only to women, include cleanser, facial wash, lotion, and emulsion. Inside the bag are a hot spring towel and a toothbrush set. The water at Sanshiokan is so natural that it’s even sold, and we were told to definitely try it. There are Japanese-style and USB outlets next to the pillow. The room’s lights can be controlled from the pillow. It’s great that you can adjust the light intensity! Saturday stay, 2 people per room, ¥24,200 per person For snacks, we had original yokan made with salt from Yamashiokan. It looks like regular yokan. I don’t have a sensitive palate, so I can’t really tell the difference, but it’s definitely delicious. Yanshiokan has a spring rich in salt on its premises, and the owner himself will guide you if you wish. The salt spring has been designated a natural monument. There’s a cauldron where salt is refined. The liquid coming out of the pump is salty, even though it’s in the mountains. How can salty water come out so deep in the mountains? It’s mysterious, isn’t it? If you’re interested, the owner himself will explain in detail the story of the mysterious saltwater that springs from approximately 7,000 meters underground. Apparently, the river flowing next to the spring also contains salt. Nature is truly mysterious. He’ll also tell you about how salt is made and the characteristics of mountain salt. The salt is made by the owner’s grandfather, nicknamed “Salt Grandpa,” and the owner himself is currently training to become a salt maker. “Shio-jii” is now over 80 years old, and his days at the boiler are fewer and fewer. Mountain salt is a precious commodity. Mountain salt has significantly less magnesium than seawater, giving it a soft saltiness and a hint of sweetness. This is a block of salt. So it forms into a block like this. It’s fascinating. Due to the decline in production due to “Shio-jii”‘s advanced age, mountain salt is now only available to guests staying at the hotel or at a nearby farm shop. After the tour, we head to the baths. Apparently, the proprietress of Sanshiokan is a certified “hot spring therapy instructor.” We’ve arrived. In front of the large bath is a resting room and a display of hot spring legends handed down from the age of the gods. The baths are alternated daily between men and women. Let’s take a look at the first bath. The changing room is spacious. There are five showers, and the bathroom is also spacious. You can see the beautiful trees outside the large glass windows. Let’s take a look at the other bathroom. It seems a little smaller than the previous changing room. Hand soap, lotion, and a hair dryer are provided by the sink. The changing room window faces the street, so don’t go near it naked. There are also five showers here. Yamenshiokan does not have an open-air bath. Body soap, shampoo, and conditioner provided. The bath is divided into two sections. This is lukewarm hot spring water straight from the source. This is a warm hot spring where the water is heated. I’ve heard that alternating baths is good for the parasympathetic nervous system. I try licking the spring water. It tastes salty. I start with the lukewarm water. The temperature is about 35 degrees. Apparently, the heat from the heated bath next door is transmitted through the wall, making the hot spring water warmer than normal. It doesn’t bother me even if it’s a little lukewarm in the summer. The vibrant green color is beautiful. I move to the heated bath next door. The temperature of this hot spring is about 40 degrees Celsius. It’s just right. There’s a stone plaque explaining the origins of the salt spring. The hot springs here are said to be recommended for those prone to colds or dry skin. It’s time for dinner. I’m looking forward to the meal, which will feature mountain salt and local ingredients. The meal is served in a dining area separated by a cloth partition. Appetizers made with mountain vegetables, sesame tofu, etc. As befits the mountain setting, the fish served are carp. The whole family cooks the meals together, and they aim for simple, gentle flavors, using as few artificial seasonings and food additives as possible. The meat is venison. They’re in the mountains, so they use game. Venison has no odor and is easy to eat. The simmered carp has a beautiful color and luscious texture!! The taste was sweet and salty and very delicious. There was no fishy smell at all! I ate it all. This is grilled sweet trout sprinkled with mountain salt. It’s a standard menu item at inns. Chawanmushi (steamed custard) also arrived. The sweetfish grilled with mountain salt had a crispy skin and was delicious. I also sprinkled mountain salt on the mountain vegetable tempura. He didn’t worry about his high blood pressure, just poured salt on everything lol. A small bowl of soba noodles arrived, so I had tempura soba. Soba noodles and tempura go so well together, don’t they? So delicious. Oshika Village Koshihikari rice arrived. Clear soup Pickles Two desserts I asked the hostess for some special mountain salt. I’m tempted to simply sprinkle salt on the rice and try it! Perhaps the best accompaniment to rice is delicious salt. Thank you for the meal! It’s late into the night. Good night. It’s a beautiful sunny day! I’m in high spirits! I’ll have breakfast at the same table as last night. Breakfast is simple Japanese cuisine, including fish, mountain vegetables, tamagoyaki (rolled egg), and tofu. One thing a little different from usual is the presence of salt. The sign says to sprinkle mountain salt on the tofu, which is made in Oshika Village. Follow the instructions and sprinkle the salt. I don’t have a delicate flavor, but I felt like I could taste the subtle sweetness of the soybeans amid the saltiness. Instead of soy sauce, I’ll try sprinkling salt on my tamagoyaki. !!!!!!!!!!! So delicious!!! The mountain salt goes perfectly with the sweet tamagoyaki! Thank you for the delicious breakfast. What did you all think? This was an introduction to a mysterious inn where salt springs forth despite being deep in the mountains. Why not visit this hidden hot spring where foreign guests are rarely seen?
