Kyoto Miyama – Kajikasou Campground (Forest Area) I love camping, but for me, going out in the middle of summer really takes a lot of courage. This year feels even hotter than usual, and I’m someone who can’t handle heat well. Every day, it feels almost impossible to breathe. Just after setting up my tarp, my clothes were already drenched in sweat. I hate the feeling of being sweaty all over and not being able to take a shower right away 😭. Sometimes I wonder: if a disaster happened and I couldn’t shower for days, how would I survive 😷? I truly admire people who still camp in such scorching summer heat. Though autumn has officially started, the forecast says this heat will continue until mid-September. By the time I finished setting up camp, it was already 5 PM. It was still as hot as midsummer, but the sun was setting earlier. At dusk, I went down to the river to watch the sunset. Right next to the Kajikasou Campground runs the clear stream of the Yura River. By 6:30 PM, it was getting dark, so I hurried back to cook dinner. Tonight I brought lamb, stir-fried with onions and scallions. Lately I’ve been cutting carbs, so I eat more meat instead. I ended up cooking the whole pack of lamb without checking how many grams 😂. Sprinkled with a bit of shichimi spice and finished with scallions, the aroma was amazing. Simmering slowly on low heat, eating bite by bite—simple but satisfying 😊. No matter how hot, a campfire is essential. As night fell, the cicadas’ voices grew faint, as if drifting into sleep. Once the sky was completely dark, I lit all my lamps. A summer night’s campfire always has a healing power. Tonight, I was the only camper here. Quiet and peaceful. Good night, Miyama. At 5 AM, I had planned to see the sunrise, but thick fog covered the sky. So instead, I took a walk and captured the atmosphere for friends who haven’t been here. There’s a vending machine near the wash area. The restroom is close to the solo sites, forest sites, and cabins. A small path beside it leads to a bridge over the Yura River. Shrouded in morning mist, the river was tranquil and dreamlike. The kitchen area is spacious, with 16 spots and 6 sinks. Along the river are 4 day-use sites. The “Sky Area” connects with the cabins. The larger cabin holds up to 10 people with tatami floors. The smaller cabin accommodates 4; it’s my favorite, and I want to try it in autumn. Further along is the free site: wide open, but no shade and far from the restrooms. Eventually, you reach Kajikaso The Yura River also has a 20 km running course—I want to bring my running shoes in autumn. Back at my forest site, behind it lies the solo area, denser with trees, no cars allowed. The morning sun lit up the dew on my tarp, sparkling beautifully. Cicadas grew louder as the day began. I usually clean and pack slowly, without rushing. I found two trees to hang my hammock. Once the dew dried, it was time to pack up. Check-in is at 3 PM, check-out at 2 PM the next day. In this heat, everything feels heavier. I paused for a break, sipping cold water. Folding a large tarp neatly all by myself gave me a sense of accomplishment 😂. But each trip back and forth left me drenched again. Before leaving, I soaked in the Kajikasou onsen. 600 yen per adult. This camping trip was truly wonderful. To the right is the famous Kayabuki-no-Sato, the thatched-roof village. It was too hot this time—so I’ll come back in autumn 😊. Life can never be perfect.
It’s the little imperfections that give us dreams and hopes for something better. In this imperfect world, may every day be a good day
God bless us. Peace.
