宮城県 鳴子温泉 こけし探訪の旅
宮城県の鳴子温泉へ、こけしをテーマにした旅に出かけました。鳴子温泉は、東北を代表するこけしの産地として知られています。
温泉街に一歩足を踏み入れると、そこかしこにこけしの看板やユニークなオブジェが点在しており、まるで街全体がこけしの美術館のようです。一つひとつ表情の違うこけしを探しながら歩くのは、まるで宝探しをしているようで、ワクワクが止まりません。
個性豊かなこけしとの出会い
鳴子こけしは、ろくろで挽いた木から作られる、素朴で温かみのある工芸品です。温泉街を歩いていると、伝統的な様式美を持つこけしから、現代風にアレンジされた個性的なこけしまで、様々な「こけしとの出会い」がありました。
また、鳴子にはこけし工人さんの工房も多く、運が良ければ制作風景を間近で見学できます。木が削られていく様子や、筆で一つひとつ丁寧に顔が描かれていく過程は、まさに職人技。その丁寧な手仕事に触れると、こけしへの愛着がさらに深まります。
今回は、時間の都合で体験できませんでしたが、次回はぜひ、自分だけのこけしに絵付けをする体験にも挑戦してみたいです。
Naruko Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture: A Kokeshi-themed Journey
I embarked on a kokeshi-themed trip to Naruko Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture. Naruko Onsen is known as one of the leading kokeshi production areas in the Tohoku region.
As soon as I stepped into the hot spring town, kokeshi signs and unique objects were scattered everywhere, making the entire town feel like a kokeshi museum. Walking around searching for kokeshi dolls, each with its own unique expression, felt like a treasure hunt—an endless thrill.
Encountering Unique Kokeshi
Naruko kokeshi are simple, warm-hearted handicrafts made from lathe-turned wood. As I walked through the hot spring town, I encountered a variety of kokeshi, from traditionally beautiful to unique, modern-style dolls.
Naruko is also home to many kokeshi craftsmen’s workshops, and if you’re lucky, you can see them being made up close. The way the wood is carved and the process of carefully painting each face with a brush are true examples of artisanal skill. Seeing this careful handiwork deepens your attachment to kokeshi dolls.
Due to time constraints, I wasn’t able to participate this time, but next time I would definitely like to try painting my own kokeshi doll.
