Hi everyone, I’m Adventurer P. On the way from Nagoya to Hida Takayama, there’s a small, picturesque town called “Gujo Hachiman” that’s not crowded with tourists. The summer festival here, the “Gujo Dance Festival,” lasts for over a month. In this episode, we’ll explore the attractions of Gujo Hachiman on foot. In addition to soaking up the festival atmosphere, we ‘ll also enjoy delicious food. So, let’s get going! This is a two-day, one-night trip from Nagoya to Gujo Hachiman, with a one-night stopover, and then on to Takayama. Adventure Pig will provide detailed transportation information. Feel free to skip this section if you don’t need this information. A video about going directly to Gujo Hachiman. We’re now near the Taiko-dori Exit inside Nagoya Station, preparing to take the bus to Meitetsu Station. Adventure Pig introduced the geographical structure of Nagoya Station in the episode “Nagoya Port.” We’re currently walking along the main axis connecting the “Sakuradori Exit” and “Taikodori Exit” inside the station. Meitetsu Station is located near the Sakuradori Exit. Follow the signs overhead and you’ll soon see the Meitetsu Bus Center sign . You can reach the Meitetsu Bus Center from the elevator inside Nagoya Station , or exit from the Sakuradori Exit on the first floor and head to the Meitetsu Department Store. Traveling from Nagoya to Takayama is also possible. You can take the JR , but this time, Adventure Pig wanted to stay overnight in Koriyama Hachiman City, so he chose to take the highway bus. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Nagoya to Gujo Hachiman , and about 1.5 hours from Gujo Hachiman to Takayama. However, Adventure Pig must remind everyone that during the peak season such as summer vacation and long holidays in Japan, highway buses are prone to delays due to traffic jams. You can buy tickets directly at the bus center, but to be safe, it is recommended to book online in advance. We took the bus to Takayama that departed at 9:30 am and was expected to arrive at the Gujo Hachiman interchange at 11:06 am. If you are also If you book your e-ticket first, remember to make sure your phone has internet access. The e-ticket must be checked by the driver through the ticket website on your phone. If you’re heading to Takayama, don’t worry too much about using the restroom. While there are restrooms on the bus , the driver will let you use the restroom and buy water at rest stops along the way . That’s how we arrived at Gujo Hachiman safely . Did you wonder why we stopped right next to the interchange? That’s right, Gujo Hachiman is right next to the interchange. Adventure Pig wants to explain the highway bus station at Gujo Hachiman. Google The express bus stop on the map is called “Gujo Hachiman Interchange,” but the one marked on this map is for the bus bound for Nagoya. In fact, there are two stops , and there’s an expressway interchange in the middle. You can’t cross the interchange to go the other way. So if you leave Gujo Hachiman and want to go to Nagoya or Mino, (The data is from August 2025, so I’m not sure if the official has made any improvements since then. I need to confirm again.)
basically just follow the instructions on the Google Map. But if you want to go to Takayama, you can’t just follow the map. Follow the instructions on the Google Map and you will definitely pass by this field. You have to cross the path and cave in the field, then walk about 100 meters to the left and you will reach the bus stop for Takayama. In fact, I saw someone complaining about this bus stop on Google Maps , and some even missed the bus because they couldn’t find it. Fortunately, my friend remembered the way and found the bus stop on his own. Next, we were going to the city of Gujo Hachiman. Walking from the interchange to the bus stop, it will take about 7-8 minutes. You will pass this bridge across the Nagara River. The bus stop is next to the EDON store. In this episode, the Adventure Pig talked about taking the bus in more detail because Google Maps is not the best place to go in Gujo Hachiman. The bus information on the map isn’t 100% accurate. Buses run every 20 minutes, and walking to the castle town also takes 20 minutes. It was so hot, so of course we took the bus. We arrived at Gujo Hachiman Castle Town Plaza , which houses the tourist center and luggage storage. Our hotel for tonight, Yoshidaya, is right next to the castle town plaza, less than a 30-second walk away. I’ll show you the inside at the end of the video. We’ll start by sightseeing the local attractions on foot (each attraction is about a 10-minute walk away). Japan has many quaint historical sites, but Gujo Hachiman is very different. Takayama Old Street and Okayama’s Kurashiki are independent historical areas that have been carefully preserved in modern cities, but Gujo Hachiman is more like an entire town, stuck in the Showa era. There’s not much commercial atmosphere, but every corner of the town is charming. First, we need to fill our stomachs. This “Shota Udon” is highly praised, and its udon is actually very delicious. This restaurant is run by a young man named Shota, his grandmother, and his mother, three generations of people, who have carefully managed it. Adventure Pig’s mom ordered the tempura and udon soup set. She was touched by the green onions on the side. Adventure Pig ordered mentaiko noodles and fried tempura, which came with a small bowl of white rice. If you have a normal appetite, we recommend the Adventure Pig one; it tastes just right. For those with a big appetite, you can order the set meal that Adventurous Pig Machi eats; the portion is enormous. Have you heard of “Ichimi Noodles”? I often see it in restaurants in Gifu, but I later learned it’s actually spicy noodles. I think it’s delicious. It’s not super spicy, but it’s very fragrant. Every restaurant and shop in Gujo Hachiman is unique. It’s Gujo Dance Festival season, which runs from mid-July to early September. The town is full of shops selling accessories that complement yukatas, and even if you’re not attending the festival, this is a great place to pick up souvenirs for your family. Less than three minutes from Shota Udon is our first stop, the “Yanaka Waterway.” This short waterway is one of Gujo Hachiman’s famous attractions. The willow trees and stone-paved walkway, along with the old houses on either side, are beautiful to photograph from any angle. Wearing a yukata makes the photos even more perfect. Where can I rent a yukata? Let’s go! Let’s go and see where you can rent yukata. This shop, called Paper Rock Kimono Shop, has been around for generations and is officially recommended by Gujo Hachiman. They offer both men’s and women’s yukatas, and the prices are very reasonable. A complete set with accessories is only 4,000 yen (including dressing assistance but no hairdressing). If you like, you can buy it for 5,500 yen. This Western-style building, built in 1936, served as the city hall at the time. It is now a registered national tangible cultural property. Besides the unique architecture itself, the interior has been converted into a souvenir shop and tourist information center. The souvenirs here are diverse and adorable. Don’t miss this place when you’re in Gujo Hachiman. Many of the clothes and small bags here are designed with the “Gujo Dance” theme, and the patterns are very cute and the quality is also very good. They also sell a variety of hand towels (hand towels are common in central Japan), as well as products made with Gujo Hachiman’s specialty sweetfish and shiitake mushroom soup. Gujo Hachiman, known for its high-quality water, of course, also has… Natural spring water products. Did you know that the author of Chibi Maruko-chan loved Gujo Hachiman? That’s why she created the character and animation gj8man. Not far from the Gujo Hachiman Old Government Building is the “Igawa Trail.” Gujo Hachiman is also known as the “Water Town.” In ancient times, in order to facilitate water supply for daily life and to be able to quickly obtain water to extinguish fires, the residents of Gujo Hachiman diverted the water of the Yoshida River to various houses throughout the town. As a result, the castle town is full of waterways, which is a unique feature of Gujo Hachiman. The “Igawa Trail,” which is only 119 meters long, also came from this. Now it has become a carp paradise , and you can buy fish feed to feed the carp here. The weather today was not very good to begin with, and it rained heavily around 2 pm. I wonder if anyone has ever encountered the situation where their passport and banknotes were completely soaked by the heavy rain. From then on, I only use small bags with waterproof functions, and Porter carry-on luggage. I only use bags from the brand founded by my friend. A good friend of Adventure Pig used to develop special fabrics for European bag (and clothing) brands , like the ever-famous Mammoth and the popular shopping bag brand Longchamp. She’s become very knowledgeable and particular about fabrics. Now, years later, she’s founded her own YNA bag. Its double-layer waterproof outer and inner lining design, paired with YKK zippers , even takes ergonomics into consideration. A three-layer back gusset and multi-layer shoulder straps allow you to carry it outdoors all day without feeling tired. The key point is that YNA bags are our own Taiwanese brand. We don’t want to spend money on advertising , so we want everyone to be able to buy them at a lower price. Adventure Pig has the YNA official website and bags. The address of the exhibition studio is in the video description. Friends who live in Hsinchu can also visit the studio when they have time. Now you see the statues of “Yamauchi Kazutoyo” and his wife “Chiyo”, which means you have reached the vicinity of Gujo Hachiman Castle. It takes about 20 minutes to climb from the foot of the mountain to the top of Hachiman Mountain. You will first see the “Hinbashi” monument. Gujo Hachiman, located in the center of Gifu Prefecture , was an important strategic location for daimyo during the Japanese Warring States Period. Although Gujo Hachiman Castle is not large in size , it has many unique stories of its own. Let’s appreciate the interior of the castle and get to know it. Like many Japanese castles, the original Gujo Hachiman Castle was built in 186 The castle was abandoned in 1589 and the castle tower was rebuilt in 1933. However, the stone walls of Gujo Hachiman Castle are all from 1588. The original stone wall of the castle tower is also the oldest wooden castle tower rebuilt in Japan. This castle was built at the end of the Warring States period when Endo Morikazu defeated the then lord Higashi Tsuneyoshi (in the Battle of Akayayama Castle). One of the preludes to the Battle of Sekigahara that decided the end of the Warring States period was the Battle of Hachiman Castle. Endo Yoshitaka, who had lost his position as lord of the castle, chose to join the Eastern Army led by Tokugawa Ieyasu because of his resentment towards Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After obtaining Ieyasu’s consent, he attacked the Western Army ( The castle was built at Hachiman Castle (owned by Inaba Sadamichi), owned by the Toyotomi faction. A fierce battle ensued, resulting in heavy casualties. After the Battle of Sekigahara, Endo Yoshitaka successfully reclaimed Hachiman Castle as its lord. Another thing you should know about Gujo Hachiman Castle is that its 354-meter-high tower offers breathtaking views. Ryotaro Shiba even described it as “Japan’s most beautiful mountain castle, hidden from the world.” From the fourth floor of the castle tower, the castle is surrounded by mountains and mist, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding scenery. After returning to the foot of the mountain, we’ll take you to the museum. Here, you can witness the Gujo Dance Festival, featuring 10 different dances (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM). The one-hour show allows you to truly experience the charm of the Gujo Odori. There are about 10 temples within walking distance of the castle town. Each temple has its own story and history, so you don’t have to make a special plan to visit each one. You will definitely pass by some of them while strolling through the old streets of the castle town. Another temple worth visiting is Daijo-ji Temple, located near Shojinmachi. If you come to Gujo Hachiman in autumn, it is also a spot for viewing autumn leaves (another spot for viewing autumn leaves is Jien Zen-ji Temple – more recommended). When you come to Daijo-ji Temple, remember to look out from Daijo-ji Temple at Hachiman Castle on the opposite hill. The view is particularly beautiful. Gujo Hachiman is famous for its many old streets. The castle town has Shojinmachi, Blacksmithmachi, Kitamachi and other old streets. The layout and appearance of the streets are maintained as they were in the early Edo period. Because of the Gujo Odori, you can see large lanterns hanging everywhere. The grandest festival of the year, from mid-July to early September, is held here. During the Gujo Odori, dancing continues all night long. There happened to be no activities on the day I came, otherwise there would be dancing at night. The official festival schedule is only released about a month in advance , but after this experience, I have some experience. After mid-July, it will only be held on Saturday and Sunday evenings. In August, it will be held every day before the day before the Obon Festival. If you want to attend the festival in the future, you can plan according to this schedule. We walked to the most famous bridge in Gujo Hachiman, the “Miyazake Bridge” that crosses the Yoshida River. Everyone passing by here must stop and look at the flowing river and the surrounding scenery. The water quality of the Yoshida River is very clean and clear. It is said that local children like to run to this river to play in the summer. Gujo Hachiman’s local specialty, sweetfish, also lives in this river. The water quality is so clean, so sweetfish must be very delicious (many local restaurants and hotels offer sweetfish dishes). Next to the Miyagase Bridge is the “Soji Water”, one of the 100 famous springs in Japan. This natural spring has been producing spring water for 600 years. During the Edo period, it was an important source of water for local residents. To this day, the “Soji Water God Ceremony” is held every August. We held a festival to express our gratitude for the natural spring water that has been caring for the people of Gujo Hachiman since ancient times . It was getting late, so we prepared to eat. “Shimbashi-tei”, a restaurant specializing in Gujo local cuisine, is also a popular restaurant. Although they sell grilled sweetfish dishes , none of us particularly like sweetfish, so my friend ordered the fried (pork) loin set meal. The loin set meal was very delicious. Those who like fried dishes can order this. I ordered the grilled chicken dish, but I never expected that it would be a plate of raw chicken when it was served. I had to cook it myself (the menu photo shows it cooked). Fortunately, I usually cook my own food, so I didn’t mess it up. I really like restaurants outside of Japan’s big cities. Even restaurants in tourist attractions are cheaper, and the portions are huge and delicious. The restaurant owner and the owner’s wife are both a little older and very kind. If you are staying in Gujo for a night and don’t have a hotel dinner, I highly recommend coming here for dinner to show you the interior of Yoshidaya . If you’re interested in those Japanese-style guesthouses in the countryside of Japan mentioned in “Stay a Night in the Japanese Countryside,” then Gujo Hachiman is the right place. Almost 90% of the guesthouses here have Japanese-style rooms, so why did Adventure Pig choose Yoshidaya’s Western-style rooms? Of course, after some research, Adventure Pig found that Yoshidaya is one of the few Western-style rooms in Gujo that offers an in-room bathroom . That’s right! If you’re like me, and you get so anxious without your own toilet that you can’t sleep, when you see a Japanese-style tatami room, be sure to check if it has an in-room bathroom . Most Japanese-style rooms have shared bathrooms with other guests. You’ll need to call the hotel to make a reservation, but the hotel has English-speaking reception staff, so you don’t have to worry about language barriers. We offer an additional breakfast. Although it doesn’t have meat , it’s rich in protein and nutrition, and the taste is delicious. Do you like Gujo Hachiman? Adventure Pig thinks it’s a great place to plan a stop on the way to Hida Takayama. That way, you won’t spend all your time in the car and can still discover a different Japan. Thank you for reading to the end! Adventure Pig will take you to Hida Takayama later. Bye.

(Jackwolfskin , Peak Performance, Mountain Equipment, Brooks England, KNOMO… )
