那須温泉「森旬の籠」できる大人が選ぶ、静寂の湯宿で極上の時間を Luxury Retreat for the Refined: “Shinshun no Kago” at Nasu Onsen
This is Ryo. Today, I’ll be introducing a luxury hotel where you can fully enjoy the hot spring source of Nasu Onsen. This is a luxurious retreat nestled in the mountains. In the previous video, I featured Shikanoyu, a famous hot spring nurtured by the Nasu volcano. But Nasu has many other hot spring sources. Today, we’ll visit a hidden gem deep in the forest, with a different spring quality. It’s a hotel where you can enjoy a completely different bathing experience. Let me show you this secluded hideaway. A peaceful retreat surrounded by trees. Let’s head right in. The hotel I’m introducing today is… Morishun no Kago, which just opened last year. It’s located near the Nasu Imperial Villa, in a serene setting surrounded by fresh air and tranquility. The entrance is quite grand. Morishun no Kago opened in November 2024 as a luxury resort. It’s the latest flagship hotel from the Hewitt Resort brand, which operates from Hokkaido to Okinawa. As you step inside, you’re greeted by a sophisticated blend of wood warmth and stone elegance. The design is refined and calming. It almost feels like being in a high-end lounge. Just beyond the check-in counter, large windows reveal a scenic view— a quiet forest, like a scene from a movie. Fresh greenery in spring, deep greens in summer, autumn foliage, and snow-covered landscapes in winter. With each season, your heart finds peace in its changing beauty. Now, let’s head to the room. The room I’m staying in today is a suite with a garden, located in a separate building. Open the door, and you’re welcomed by a calm entryway— like a private residence. The hallway has many doors, and you’ll be tempted to open them all… but let’s check out the main room first. What a wonderfully serene atmosphere. The perfect hideaway for adults. The spacious sofa can also serve as an extra bed. After a soak in the hot spring, this is the perfect place to relax. On the table, you’ll find a coffee grinder that looks like camping gear. Grinding your own beans makes the coffee extra special. The fridge is stocked with complimentary soft drinks. They also thoughtfully provide charging cables and extension cords. Small touches that show attention to detail. The large-screen TV displays hotel information— even the official hot spring water analysis. I’ll explain the hot spring quality in detail later. Looking out the window, you’ll see a garden that resembles a natural Nasu forest. The standout is this impressive maple tree— it turns a brilliant red in autumn and creates a stunning view. Let’s check out the bedroom. Soft lighting gently illuminates the room, with two semi-double beds. Sliding paper doors add a Japanese accent, giving it the feel of a private hideaway. It felt like sleeping embraced by the forest— a truly luxurious night. The atmosphere really fits the name “Morishun no Kago.” Now, let’s take a look at the private hot spring bath, fed directly from the source. The oval bathtub, with its glossy ceramic finish, contrasts beautifully with the dark walls— it’s like a blend of luxury ryokan and designer hotel. And then… There’s this luxurious milky-white cloudy water. The gentle sound of flowing water, and the soft natural light—so calming. You can soak without any interruptions and lose track of time. This is the true luxury of having your own private bath. Step outside the window, and you’ll find— an open-air bath filled with a sense of freedom. Crisp, refreshing air invites deep breaths, surrounded by a peaceful green garden. And there you can enjoy the silky, cloudy hot spring water. It’s the ultimate healing space—forest bathing and hot spring bathing combined. Pure bliss. Next, let’s talk about the spring’s composition. This spring has a strong sulfur scent— it’s classified as a simple sulfur spring. The source temperature is 54.7°C. That’s quite hot as-is, so it’s best to adjust the temperature with added water or stirring. As for the flow rate— it gushes out at the equivalent of 160 oil drums per hour! Actually, Nasu Onsen boasts one of the highest natural flow rates in Japan. The pH level is 5.8, slightly acidic. Compared to Shikanoyu in Nasu Yumoto, this water is milder and gentler on the skin. In fact, weakly acidic pH levels of 3 to 6 are close to human skin— cosmetics are often made with the same pH. On top of that, this hot spring is rich in bicarbonate ions, which have a cleansing effect, as well as sulfate and metasilicic acid, which are highly moisturizing. These minerals are abundant. Like Shikanoyu, it’s known as a beautifying hot spring. You’ll find similar qualities in Shiobara Onsen too— clearly, Tochigi is a paradise for skin-beautifying hot springs. In addition to the two baths, this room even comes with a private sauna. It has a löyly function too, so you can enjoy a burst of intense heat. Beyond that is the washroom. Dark-toned tiles and white sinks create a stylish, modern atmosphere. The double-sink setup makes morning routines a breeze. In the drawers, you’ll find single-use skincare products. Next to the sink area, there’s a powder room that doubles as a closet. It includes a vanity desk, so you can take your time doing your makeup in a calm space. There’s also extra storage space here. You can access this room not only from the sink area, but also directly from the hallway. All those doors earlier— they were for accessing the sink and powder rooms! Everything is well-connected. Lastly, here’s what the toilet area looks like. The counter and sink area are also elegantly designed. Overall, the bathroom facilities are clean, functional, and very comfortable. Before dinner, let’s take a short walk around the hotel. All rooms at Morishun no Kago come with a semi-open-air bath, but there’s also a spacious communal bath available. Relax and take in the view as you soak in the large tub. After bathing, unwind in the massage chair. The smoking area is in a dedicated booth, so no need to worry about secondhand smoke. At night, this lounge transforms into a bar. They offer cocktails, whiskey, and even local Tochigi sake— all complimentary! It was before dinner, but we couldn’t resist having a drink. Dinner is served in this private dining room. Since all rooms are private, you can enjoy your meal in complete relaxation. We were guided to a wonderful private room with a view of the greenery outside the window. The menu lists only the ingredients used— leaving you to imagine what kind of dishes will come. A thoughtful touch that sparks fun conversations. Dinner begins with a beautifully arranged appetizer. Each dish is crafted with the chef’s passion— a work of art on a plate. Premium ingredients are used generously. This is a Nadeshiko, an edible flower. Such elegance. Next is a refreshing summer dish, served on a rustic wabi-sabi plate. Here we have grilled fish with a tomato, basil, and olive oil sauce— a stylish fusion. Served on a modern plate, this is sushi made with seasoned rice. One piece is pressed sushi with simmered beef, wrapped gently in grated yam. It melts in your mouth like a Japanese dessert— delicate sweetness and rich flavor. The other piece is sushi with rare Ichibo beef. A quick sear brings out the meat’s full umami flavor. Now, it’s time for the main dish. From under the dome emerges— a jewel-like cut of Tochigi beef tenderloin. Slowly cooked at a low temperature to lock in moisture and flavor. Tender and flavorful—it melts in your mouth. This beef is simply exquisite. Served once again in a gorgeous dish— it’s the rice course. You can choose from ikura don (salmon roe), beef bowl, or oyako don (chicken and egg bowl). My wife chose ikura don, and I had the beef bowl. What a luxurious way to end the meal! And for the grand finale— a modern dessert that feels like French cuisine. Silky panna cotta with basil-scented crème anglaise leaves a refreshing finish. Strawberries and blueberries add the perfect final touch. From the appetizers to the final dessert, it was a series of delightful surprises. Each course made us excited for what would come next. We truly enjoyed every dish. The ingredients were not only luxurious and fresh, but the cooking techniques brought out their full potential—true artistry. It was a gourmet experience that stimulated all five senses, a dinner that went far beyond the concept of a typical auberge. The next morning was lovely. Let’s go for a stroll along the walking path behind the hotel. Sunlight filters through the trees in true Nasu style. The gentle sound of the stream is so soothing. After enjoying a morning soak in the hot spring, let’s head to breakfast. What an impressive spread! This rolled omelet even has eel inside—what a surprise! Zucchini topped with snow crab— they don’t hold back, even for breakfast. And hot miso soup and yudofu (tofu hot pot) complete the meal. We finished everything with great satisfaction. Finally, we enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee in the lounge before checking out. So today, we introduced Morishun no Kago, a luxury hotel nestled in Nasu Onsen. With just 20 rooms in a large building, this exclusivity adds a special sense of luxury to your stay. Stylish rooms overlooking lush gardens, gentle milky hot springs, and creative cuisine that warms the soul— combined with attentive service worthy of a luxury hotel, we can wholeheartedly recommend this place. Also, Morishun no Kago offers shuttle service to Shiobara Onsen Station, so it’s convenient for those arriving by Shinkansen. Not just a summer retreat, you can also safely enjoy Nasu’s snowy scenery here in winter. And finally, let me show you footage of the only zoo I ever revisit— Nasu Animal Kingdom. That’ll be the end of this video.
