Popo 260 in Abashiri City, Hokkaido

Popo 260 is a 260-meter-long seawater-friendly breakwater built in 1995 along the coast of Abashiri City, Hokkaido.

Designed to bring people closer to the sea, the structure also serves as a walking promenade where visitors can stroll while enjoying ocean views.

Once the departure point for the popular drift ice sightseeing icebreaker Aurora, the facility saw many visitors.

However, since the opening of the nearby Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri (Roadside Station Drift Ice Highway Abashiri), the Aurora’s boarding area has been relocated there, and Popo 260 has become much quieter.

Despite its decline in traffic, Popo 260 still offers some of the best panoramic views of the Sea of Okhotsk.

From observation decks located along the path and at the breakwater’s tip, visitors can gaze out toward the majestic Shiretoko Mountain Range across the sea.

Along the walkway, you’ll find stone monuments of regional wildlife, including whales, white-tailed eagles, and sea otters.

A notable sign warns visitors not to climb the concrete railings: “If you fall into the sea, you won’t be saved.”

The name Popo 260 comes from a blend of local culture and design: “Popo” refers to Nipopo, a traditional Ainu-style wooden doll symbolic of Abashiri, while the number 260 reflects the breakwater’s total length in meters.
