The charm of the sacred mountain, Oyama Pilgrimage
Walking through the history and nature of Shonan Mount Oyama, located in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, towering north of Shonan Since ancient times, this mountain has been worshipped as a sacred mountain for praying for rain and bountiful harvests. During the Edo period, “Oyama Pilgrimage” became a huge trend among the common people of Edo as a form of leisure and prayer trip. Today I decided to go on a pilgrimage to Mt. Oyama. Today, in recognition of its cultural value, Mt. Oyama has been registered as a Japan Heritage Site. The “Oyama Pilgrimage,” in which Edo commoners would make pilgrimages to the shrine carrying giant wooden swords, is registered as a Japan Heritage site. We arrived at the Isehara municipal parking lot, located halfway up Mt. Oyama. If you cross the Afuri Bridge, which is located very close to the parking lot, you will find the Mt. Oyama Tourist Information Center. From here, we walk towards Oyama Afuri Shrine. The road from here to Oyama Afuri Shrine is called “Koma Sando.” These stairs have been used since ancient times to make pilgrimages to Mt. Oyama. This approach to the shrine has also been used as a recreational route by common people since the Edo period. Since the Edo period, it has been customary to buy an auspicious Oyama top as a souvenir when making a pilgrimage to Oyama. In the past, when people came to make the pilgrimage to Mt. Oyama, they would stay the night on this approach before heading to Oyama Afuri Shrine. It still welcomes travelers today. When Edo’s population was 1 million, it is said that as many as 200,000 people visited Mt. Oyama every year. After walking along Koma Sando for about 15 minutes, you will come to a bridge, and just past that is the cable car station. Arrived at Oyama Cable Station The fare from Oyama Cable Station to the destination, Afurijinja Station, is 640 yen one way for adults. It takes about 6 minutes to get there. Get on the cable car. We climb up Mt. Oyama in one go, up a very steep slope. Of course, there were no cable cars in the Edo period. Considering this, they probably stayed the night at Koma Sando and climbed this steep slope early in the morning. Arrived at Afurijinja Station I was impressed by the panoramic view of the Shonan cityscape. Shonandaira is a small hill near the sea. Upon arrival at Afurijinja Station, worshippers are greeted by a sacred cedar tree. Mt. Oyama is a mountain with an altitude of 1,252 meters.
There are several hiking trails. During the Edo period, craftsmen such as scaffolders would carry huge wooden swords from Edo, purify themselves in the waterfall, and then dedicate the swords to Afuri Shrine. This is a tea shop in front of Afuri Shrine. Once you reach the top of these stairs, you will enter the grounds of Afuri Shrine. The torii gate is engraved with the words “Peace throughout the world” and “Nation’s prosperity.” We have arrived at the grounds of Afuri Shrine. A grand panoramic view of Shonan I am lost for words. This video was shot in early June. I can only say that I was lucky to be able to see this view during the rainy season, when the days were filled with rain. Craftsmen of the Edo period must have also climbed up here with their wooden swords to see this view. It has been believed that gods reside in the rocks and pure waters of Mt. Oyama.
