Good morning! ☀ Today, I’m visiting Yōkoku-ji in Nagaokakyō for Hydrangea Week 💠 I’ll take the special shuttle bus that runs on the 17th of each month 🚌✨ I’ll also show you how to get there and the highlights 🌿
Hope you’ll enjoy the ride! 🤗 Starting from Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station! I’m hopping on the semi-express to Kyoto-Kawaramachi 🚋 It stops at Nishiyama-Tennōzan, our destination Since it’s the first stop, I can relax in my seat♪ And we’re off from Osaka-Umeda! It’s about 42 minutes, 11 stops No transfers needed—super easy 😊 By the way, the famous azalea spot Nagaoka Tenjin is along this line too 🌺 Would love to visit that sometime too♪ I hear the arrival announcement coming on We’ve arrived at Nishiyama-Tennōzan Station! Let’s head to the East Exit That’s the East Exit straight ahead From here, I’ll take the shuttle bus to Yōkoku-ji 🚌 Crossing the street now On the 17th, buses also run from JR Nagaokakyō Station (West Exit) Wow, look at this long line 😬😬 The bus takes you right to the temple—super convenient 🤗 Looks like it’s running a bit late… 😅 If you’re a group of 4, a taxi is also a good option! (10–15 min) It’s about 500 yen per person—same as the bus 👍️🤗 If you’re not going on the 17th… Take the regular Hankyu Bus from over there Get off at Oku-Kaijinji stop, then walk 40 minutes—uphill 😅 Oh! Finally, here comes the bus! It’s about 15 minutes late lol The ride is 500 yen, cash only Even 1,000 or 10,000 yen bills are okay 🤗 Let’s hop on! I got a solo seat ♥ Lots of people still waiting for the next one Oh wow, it’s already past 10 a.m. lol All right, off we go 🚌 The road turns from flat to mountain path as we go Google says it takes about 12 minutes Now we’re riding through a bamboo forest This area’s famous for bamboo shoots! 😋😋 We’re almost there! Are those folks waiting for the return bus? Let’s get off 🚌 The return stop is in the same spot There are benches, so you can take a break 👍️ Let’s keep walking down this path to the temple In 1–2 minutes, you’ll spot pink flags saying “Yanagidani Kannon” 🎀 Go down these stairs, then back up—almost there! ⛩️ There’s a long line to get in 😅 I’ll join the end of the line 😊 Wait, is that red rice…? Looks yummy 🍴 Plenty of shops along the way—no chance to get bored 🤗 They’re even selling dried figs lol Tons of sun hats too ☀️ Waited about 10 minutes so far, I think Gorgeous hydrangea-themed goshuin and charms 💜 The famous Jōshōin, known for autumn leaves, is open on the 17th too—9 am to 3 pm this year 🍁 Yōkoku-ji is one of the top 3 temples in the Nishiyama area ✨️ Said to be the setting of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, the main hall is beyond a bamboo grove It’s my turn! Entrance fee is 700 yen Since I’m visiting the special Kamishōin too, I’ll pay 1,500 yen 🎫 Let’s get our tickets~ My Kamishōin visit is scheduled for 12:50 🤗 Got a map of the grounds too 🌿 The hydrangea-themed water basin near the entrance is super popular!
Lots of people are lining up 💠 Look up—hydrangea umbrellas are hanging from the ceiling! ☂️ In 2024, the flowers were mostly white,
but this year, 2025, they’ve gone with cool blues 💙 These hydrangea umbrellas are for sale—or you can rent one too ✨ …Wait a sec, I forgot to eat lunch 😱 Food isn’t allowed inside,
so I asked if I could step out for a bit And they said yes! ♪ Gotta fuel up first 💖 All right, let’s find a spot to eat Turns out there’s a little area right next door where eating’s allowed,
so I’m heading over there Yay, a bench is open! ♪ Let me just get settled— Bon appétit! 😋 All charged up and ready to go 💪✨ Let’s keep heading deeper into the grounds~ 🌿 Oh, I see a little restaurant over there 🍽️ Let’s go up and check it out! It’s called “Saryō Tamaya” ✨ Run by a lovely couple,
they’re known for their handmade soba noodles 🥢 They serve more than soba—there’s curry and sweet red bean soup too 💕 I brought lunch today without knowing,
but next time, I’d love to eat here 😀 Now, let’s head back to the main gate where we checked in earlier Phew, there’s been quite a bit of uphill and downhill…
Definitely a workout today 😬💦 Now then, where should I start exploring? 👀 The map has a suggested route listed in order! Looks like the main hall is a good first stop 📖 Right through the gate, the main hall comes into view 🌿 It was rebuilt in the early Edo period,
and you can really feel the weight of history here 🤗 The main deity is the Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon ✨
You can see the sacred statue on the 17th of each month 🙏 I took a moment to offer my prayers too… ✨ With heartfelt gratitude—hands together 🙏💗 Next to it is a statue of one of Buddha’s disciples— That’s Binzuru-san ✨ We’ll be stepping onto tatami mats, so off come the shoes 👟 Don’t worry—there are chairs too,
so it’s comfortable even if you’re worried about your knees 🥹 Put your shoes in a bag,
and take your time walking to the inner sanctuary 👜✨ And wow… the golden Kannon sparkles so beautifully ✨
Truly radiant 🙏💛 Next, let’s head to Area 3,
where you’ll find the Jōdo Garden and a floral water basin 🌿 Going down a few steps… Look at that—such a beautiful garden opens up before you ✨ This is the Jōdo Garden, a stroll-style pond garden from the mid-Edo period 💐
It’s also a designated scenic spot in Kyoto Prefecture ♪ Found the floral water basin! At Yōkoku-ji, there are all kinds of seasonal flower basins to enjoy 💐✨ I think this one’s called “Koi Temizu”—Love Basin? 💖 Right next to the garden is the study hall, and on this day, they happened to be holding a pressed flower stamp workshop 🌼📖 In 2024, the Amida Hall was under renovation,
so they held it here in the study hall. I wonder where it’s being held this year 😊 Okay, let’s head over to the Upper Study Hall now 🎫 It’s 12:08 now… a little early, but let’s try anyway, haha Yup… no luck yet. Still not open 😂 If you’re not going to the Upper Study Hall,
you can pass through the corridor on the left to reach the Inner Sanctuary 🤗 Since we have a bit of time,
let’s take a quick peek around the back♪ Back here, you’ll find the “Koto Temizu” water basin And just beside it, there’s also a “Shinkinkutsu” echo water cave ✨ It’s designed so that even visitors with visual impairments
can enjoy the gentle sound of water echoing through 🤗🎶 If I go too far, I might miss my time slot…
Better head back to the Upper Study Hall now 🤭 Before I knew it, it was already 1:10 PM! lol Alright, let’s head inside ✨ The staff gave us a little intro to the room 📖 This Upper Study Hall was originally a tea room
for nobles and even emperors! About ten years ago, it was used as a film location,
which led to it being opened to the public 🎥✨ You can enjoy not just this room,
but beautiful views from the upper floor too 🌿 They even let you take special reflection shots 📷 It feels like you’re one with the garden—so dreamy… ♡ I tried taking a few photos on my phone too 📱💓 These old “step drawers” were once used as storage. Now, you can actually climb them up to the second floor♪ The view of fresh greenery from the Upper Study Hall is just stunning ✨ Apparently, this exact view was used in an Idemitsu commercial 📺🌱 Let’s take a peek down from here… This spot is one of my favorites ♥ The fresh green scenery is just… breathtaking ✨ There’s no handrail, so gotta be careful going down 😅 …Made it down safely! Haha Alright, now let’s head to the Inner Sanctuary ✨ From here, we’ll be climbing up the hydrangea path along the hillside 🌸 Wow… they’re blooming in the most beautiful shades of blue ✨ Let’s keep going up the stairs Whew… this slope is pretty steep! And it’s actually pretty long too, haha Finally made it to the Inner Sanctuary!! 💪🌿 Alright, let’s head in— To the left, you’ll see the statues of the 28 guardian deities They protect Kannon and also those who pray to her 🙏✨ And apparently, each one commands 500 heavenly followers! On the right, you’ll find memorial tablets for past emperors Behind the sanctuary is “Gannriki Inari,” protector of the main hall 🦊 They say it grants you spiritual vision—the power to see with your heart And nearby, you’ll spot a cute little Jizo statue ♥ To the right of Gannriki Inari is the Aizen Hall Inside is Aizen Myoo, the deity of love and passion 💖 And in front of him… a little demon holding up a stone slab! Wait, is this really how it’s supposed to be placed!? lol The contrast between the temple and the green maple leaves is just stunning ✨ With gratitude for the constant protection, I ring the bell ✨🔔 Hydrangeas bloom beautifully all around the sanctuary 💠 Okay, time to put my shoes back on and head outside 👟 Next stop—let’s head over to the Umbrella Sky display ☂️✨ Leaving the Inner Sanctuary now… We’ll go downhill and head toward sign number 6! The chirping birds make this walk so soothing~ 🐦🎶 Wow—this is the famous Umbrella Sky! ✨✨ This place is totally Instagram-worthy! ✨️ Just past the umbrellas, there’s a habitat for forest green tree frogs 🐸 Around this time of year, they lay their frothy white eggs in the trees Keep walking and you’ll spot the torii gate for Gannriki Inari Shrine~ Next to it is the “Oinari Flower Stairway,” beautifully lined with hydrangeas! ✨ I’ll try getting a shot of the stairway from the bottom 💠📷 To the right of the steps is Bentendo Hall, with a statue of Yodo-dono They say she brings blessings for beauty and artistic skills ✨🎨 It’s now 4:05 PM Guess it’s about time to head back~ 🤗 Oh? Looks like there’s something on sale over there! They were selling sake and sweet amazake ♥ Oh right—remember that free rest area I wanted to check out this morning? Apparently, you can take reflection photos there too 📷 The reflection board wasn’t as shiny as I expected 🤭 Took a shot, but… it didn’t reflect much 😂 Yokokuji Temple is said to help with eye health 👁️ The eye-shaped ema are so unique—it really feels like they’d work! ✨ To the left of the main hall, there’s a spot for goshuin and charms There were so many kinds, I couldn’t decide… But this paper-cut style goshuin? Absolutely stunning!! ✨️ Okay, now it’s really time to go… 🤗 Wow—first time at Yokokuji, and it was so much more entertaining than I imagined 🥰 Wish I could’ve stayed longer… but it’s getting dark 🌆 …Wait, huh? There’s no bus!? Totally forgot about the last departure time 😱 Guess I have to walk back to the station… And of course, me being directionally challenged, I went the wrong way 😂 Totally wasted time… But after walking for like 10 minutes,
luckily a kind taxi driver picked me up 🚕💦 Walking down a mountain as a woman… is no joke It got darker way faster than I thought—so scary 😰 Finally made it back to the station, lol Should’ve just taken a taxi from the start 😂 Taking the semi-express train home 🚃 Time to head back to Osaka! Next time, I’m visiting Kuanji Temple in Ikeda, Osaka ⛩️ I’ll be showing you their famous “Floating Hydrangeas,” starting June 20th! ✨ Also went to the Cup Noodles Museum by Nissin—so stay tuned! 🍜🎥 Thanks so much for watching!

Is the temple decorated like this only for a week? The statue reveal is only on one day so I understand why it is so busy….but it's a little disheartening, I must confess. It looked SO busy!
