Someone asked me if I have any tips for planning a trip? My technique is very simple. I just throw the place I want to go the most into the water as if it were a stone . If there are attractions of interest within the range of the ripples string them together to form a route. This method is very useful in Kyoto, where there are many attractions. Using routes instead of independent attractions can make the most efficient use of time and allow you to see more. “Taian”, a national treasure building that is 25 minutes away from Kyoto by Hankyu Railway, has always wanted to come here for a long time. Finally, on a certain holiday, I threw Taian into the water as if it were a stone and arranged a one-day trip to the Oyamazaki area. However, even the most careful plan can still have omissions. The farthest distance in the world is when I am standing at the door but cannot get in. Do you want to know what happened on this journey? Now, let’s go with me to Oyamazaki, a less popular tourist attraction in the suburbs of Kyoto. You can take the JR or Hankyu Railway to Oyamazaki. From the Nishiin Apartment, take the Hankyu for 25 minutes to Hankyu Oyamazaki Station. The station is built lower than the rails. Sometimes there are interesting scenes where trains whiz by overhead. Near the station is the “Rikyu Hachimangu Shrine” with a history of more than 1,150 years. This is the only shrine in Japan that enshrines the god of oil. During the Heian period, the monks at that time invented the “Nagaki” oil press and began to produce shiso oil for use as lighting oil for shrines and temples. Rikyu Hachimangu Shrine began to prosper with its exclusive patent for oil pressing . Until now, related celebrations are held regularly every year. Because of the patent status of the oil products here, there is a “National Oil and Fat Sales Store Logo” and a statue of the ancestor of oil. The main god enshrined here is Emperor Ojin , and there is also a stone where the god of learning Sugawara no Michizane sat, which is regarded as a symbol of academic success. The shrine is a powerful attraction. It is not big and has a strong sense of age. Although it is near the station, there are not many people. You can leisurely observe the ancient buildings. The sound of a tram passing by can be heard occasionally in the quiet air. The regular rhythm adds a touch of fireworks to the sacred area. Just as the perilla oil produced a thousand years ago illuminates everyone’s night. A one-minute walk from Hachimangu Shrine is Myokian , which is the focus of this trip, “Taian”. When I arrived at the door, I found that I had to make an appointment to enter and visit , and the appointment method was to reply to a postcard, so I couldn’t make a temporary appointment online. Thinking about it, since it is a national treasure , the number of visitors must be controlled to maintain the quality of the monument. Just when I was disappointed, I suddenly found a sign next to it. It turned out that there was a one-to-one restored Taian in the nearby Oyamazaki Town History Museum that could be visited Why did I want to see “Taian” so much? Besides being one of the three national treasure teahouses in Japan, this teahouse is the only one built by Sen no Rikyu and is also the oldest teahouse in existence. Although it is a replica it is a pity that it is not open for filming and cannot be shared with everyone. When visiting, I couldn’t help but imagine myself sitting with Sen no Rikyu and drinking tea. It was a kind of leisurely feeling sublimated with the master. There is a European-style family restaurant at the entrance of the station . Because there are not many restaurants here I immediately decided to have lunch here. While waiting, I looked at the illustrations on the wall. There was a strong sense of literary youth. The meal is a simple Italian-style set meal with cold soup, salad and very solid bread with pasta as the main dish. It is not a luxurious meal , but it can replenish full energy for the next little adventure. Because it is right next to the station, there are trains passing overhead when dining. If you are a railway fan, you will definitely be excited to eat here. This restaurant has A wonderful mix of European style, literary youth, and railways. Seemingly unrelated elements are mixed into a relaxing space to release the traveler’s fatigue. Cross the JR railway and walk uphill for about 10 minutes to reach Hojikuji Temple . It has been an important transportation and military stronghold since ancient times. Hojikuji Temple is located halfway up Tenno Mountain, overlooking the confluence of the Kizu River, Uji River, and Katsura River. Because of its important geographical location, this area has experienced a turbulent history . It was the battlefield of the Battle of Yamazaki. In 1582, Tenno Mountain became the battlefield between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide , and Hojikuji Temple was Hideyoshi’s base camp at the time. The three-story pagoda was built by Hideyoshi after he won the Battle of Yamazaki and was designated as an important cultural property. Hojikuji Temple was built in 724 AD by order of Emperor Shomu. The main statue enshrined is the Eleven-Faced Avalokitesvara. The loving Jizo and Doraemon under the tree use cloth balls instead of painted horses. There is a little bit of childishness in the quietness. Sugawara no Michizane once received ordination in this temple. Natsume Soseki also visited here. Visiting here is like walking in the footsteps of great men and feeling the heavy history. Although it is a three-day holiday, there are not many people here. It is like quietly opening a historical story book and immersing yourself in a little time. Walk down the mountain from Hoji Temple for 15 minutes and you will reach the Oyamazaki Villa Art Museum. Pass through the small cave like a barrier and enter the charming European style world. The pond is full of water lilies. In fact, this is a tribute to the artworks collected here. Behind the garden, there are classical and avant-garde buildings. The diverse fusion of styles seems to discover a new world from a different angle. The flowing water makes this place full of spirituality Before seeing the artworks in the art museum, you are already immersed in the works of nature. Oyamazaki Villa is a villa built by Mr. Kaga in 1912. He based it on the scenery he saw when he visited Windsor Castle in the UK. Memories of the Thames I saw. This cabin was built in Oyamazaki, where the Kizu River, Uji River, and Katsura River meet. Beer lovers will see the familiar name Asahi here. In fact, this is an art museum established with the support of the president of Asahi Beer. The European-style main building is very photogenic , but in order to protect this cultural heritage, you cannot take photos indoors. The main building extends into two spaces, one is the semi-underground “underground jewelry box”, and the other is the “dream box” completed in 2012. Both were designed by the famous architect Tadao Ando. They have a distinctive style but still maintain the style of ancient monuments. The view from the cafe on the second floor is very good. You can overlook the scenery of the intersection of the three rivers and the three-story pagoda of Hojiku-ji Temple. The next day, I talked about “Oyamazaki” with my teacher at school, and their first reaction was the famous brewery “Yamazaki Distillery” in this area. Friends who are interested can also go and have a look! Walking along the road beside the railway, you will pass a small park where you can see Hankyu Railway, JR and Shinkansen. Railway fans will not want to leave here. After passing through the bamboo forest and climbing a short mountain road, you will reach Guanyin Temple. Guanyin Temple was founded by Emperor Uda in 899 during the Heian period. It gradually declined after that and now the temple has lost all its exquisiteness and splendor. The main statue here is the Eleven-faced Thousand-armed Guanyin Bodhisattva. The quiet atmosphere in the temple seems to be quietly guarding the tranquility of the Oyamazaki area. Although it is a Buddhist temple , there is a torii between the two temple buildings. This is rare in Japan. The sound of the train moving in the distance forms a sharp contrast with the tranquility here, just like my mood today, from expectation to disappointment and then to unexpected satisfaction. Although I didn’t see Taian today after a day of spiritual and visual baptism, these scenery, although not the resounding title of national treasure have also fed my spiritual desire. I often use life as a metaphor for travel. Some people like to plan carefully and expect a perfect journey, while others just go with the flow and let their mood lead them to an unknown destination. Later, I felt that this metaphor was a bit inaccurate. Life is only once but the journey can be repeated. It’s good to set a journey with a destination, but if you can’t follow the goal can you still encounter good luck by switching to a casual attitude and not worrying about the powerlessness in front of you? If you also like to find the meaning of life in the journey , welcome to subscribe to my channel and feel the charm of travel together Welcome to subscribe my channel~ I will share some unforgettable coffee shops in Kyoto. ❤🧡💛
