【Tendoso, Yamagata】Gourmet Ryokan with stunning Sakura view room

Room with stunning cherry blossom view and
cherry blossom Kaiseki course at gourmet luxury rokan with a great sense of style Hello! We went to “Tendoso” in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, No1 producer of shogi pieces in Japan. We went there for the rooms with a view of the cherry blossoms and the delicious food. “Tendoso” started as an eel restaurant in 1877, It is a historic Ryokan in Tendo Onsen that started as an inn in 1974. The charming exterior is exciting. Japanese-style and Scandinavian-style furniture, with a garden in the distance A lovely lobby with a great atmosphere We change into high-quality slippers made from Yamagata’s traditional silk fabric, “Yonezawaori,” and head to our room The rooms are located in “Azumatei” and “Rijinkyo.” Our room is named “Unohana” , room type is “Azumatei Japanese Suite” (70 m2). I’ll show you later, the bedroom is in the front left and the Japanese-style living room is in the back. And the dining room. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom!! The door on the right leads to the bathroom. It’s amazing! This room seems to have been made to make the cherry blossoms look beautiful. A staff brought us matcha and sweets We checked in while enjoying the matcha. Appearance and taste were both elegant, spring-like. After the tea, let’s continue with the room tour. Let’s start with the bathroom. The amenities are also well thought out. A compact and powerful Refa hair dryer. Flowers are placed in the rooms and building, and I thought that was a nice touch. Skin care products were Margaret Josephine Next was the shower room. It was a spacious space. The shower head was Refa. There was a rain shower and a hand shower. Then we can go to the stone open-air hot spring bath. The hot spring right in front of the cherry blossoms is amazing! The spring quality of Tendo Onsen is sodium-calcium sulfate hot spring. It is said to be a “beautiful skin bath” because it contains a lot of sodium and calcium. The dining room is on the other side. Cherry blossoms could also be seen from the room next door, “Momiji.” The shampoo and other items in the shower room were from LEAF & BOTANICS Back inside the room
There’s a small garden next to the dining room From the dining room to the Japanese-style living room The chairs in the back are also stylish A cute, retro phone Coffee and tea can be made here. The room key and bottle opener are shaped like shogi pieces. This is the bedroom. A bed instead of a futon. A cozy room with a mix of Japanese and Western styles. The other side is the closet In the closet, yukata, haori, and samue were prepared Let’s take a look inside the building. “Saloon” A space reminiscent of a retro coffee shop I get the feeling that the antique furniture and tableware here were careully chosen. The rooms, the furniture, the flowers and crafts displayed throughout the building, are all very tasteful and lovely! “Zataniwa Terrace” The large hot spring bath will be renovated in October 2024. The women’s bath is “Moss Bath” and the men’s bath is “Bamboo Bath”, and there is no switch of baths.
Both have indoor and outdoor baths. “Waiting area after bathing” – It’s like a retro and stylish bar! This might be the first time I’ve ever seen such a stylish place to relax after a bath! The furniture in the lobby looks Scandinavian, The chairs are a collaboration between the local company Tendo Mokko and Sweden’s leading designer Bruno Madson. The shop sells Yamagata crafts such as Yonezawa weaving and food. The hallways are filled with flowers, paintings, and more, making it fun just to walk around. I was guided to “Rijinkyou” by a staff. There are six Japanese-style rooms. “Rijinkyou” means to leave the real world. The lighting is subdued, and the world view of gloom and wabi-sabi spreads. Next time, I’d like to stay at room of Rijinkyo in a different season. Meal venue “Shorai” We ate in our rooms, but depending on the room and number of people, meal venue might be different. We were also looking forward to the kaiseki cuisine, which changes monthly and is also designed to correspond to the 24 solar terms. We will be enjoying the Sakura Kaiseki course during the Qingming Festival (April 5th to 19th every year). In this room, up to 2 people can dine in the room, but 3 or more people will have to dine at the venue. Grilled bamboo shoots, bamboo shoot rice and sakura buds The bamboo shoots were seasoned deliciously Japanese Sake “Dewazakura” given as a special gift from reservation site I don’t drink much alcohol, but this was very tasty! It’s more delicious when you eat it at the place of origin. “Kanzakura Kyokusui Shunsai” The menu includes Wakasa-yaki rockfish, deep-fried butterbur sprouts and scallops, and tempura cod sprouts. Then the main dish “Sakuragawa no Owan” appeared. Sakura manju with duck and local chicken wrapped in shiratama colored with cherry blossoms on a water ripple made of daikon radish. Sakura petals float on top. Wow, what a delicate and beautiful dish!
A magnificent sight on the table. I wanted to keep looking at it, but… I ate it.
Not only does it look good, it tastes great too! “Sakura sea bream sashimi” “Spring Japanese Icefish with egg” will be prepared Japanese Icefish (shirauo) is a fish that heralds the arrival of spring It looks like whitebait, a young fish of the sardine family, but It’s a different fish, a high-class fish. It’s done! “Nagomi no Kanade Sakura aroma roast” “Nagomi no Kanade” is a rare brand of Japanese beef produced only by Nagomi Nosan, a livestock farmer in Tendo City. When you turn over the cherry blossom leaves, the beef appears. It’s impressive, even the aroma is cherry blossoms. It was a steak with delicious lean meat.
First, I had it as is Then I had it with sauce “Hana Mozuku” It’s a stylish and healthy cocktail The shadows make it beautiful to look at “Grilled eel” Since its establishment in the early Meiji period, this traditional taste has been passed down from father to son. They also use carefully selected rice, which is served with each dish. For the eel , “Haenuki” rice from Yamagata Prefecture is good. We had them with miso soup and pickles. Dessert: “Spring Anmitsu” We were really looking forward to this dish, and it exceeded our expectations! The course was amazing in both appearance and taste. The staff told us, “They haven’t bloomed all the way through yet, but the weeping cherry blossoms at Kuratsugawa are beautiful.” So we walked there to see for about 10 minutes. The weeping cherry blossoms stretch for 1.4 km, and the illuminated area continues for about 750 m. Indeed not all of the cherry blossoms were in bloom, but the lighting made it enjoyable. It would be really beautiful after few more days. There are also shogi pieces! The cherry blossoms at Tendo-so bloom early, followed by Maizuruyama,
and then the weeping cherry blossoms here. I returned to Tendo-so The cherry blossoms in front were lit up The cherry blossoms in the room were also lit up,
and they were beautiful in a different way than during the day We enjoyed hot springs while watching the cherry blossoms at night. Good night Good morning! What a lovely day! The light is shining in and it’s so beautiful! Breakfast in the room with view of cherry blossoms! Another lovely set of dishes!
Everything was carefully prepared and delicious, it was a very satisfying breakfast. The rice is “Tsuyahime” from Yamagata Prefecture. The rolled omelet was also not too strong taste and I liked it. The basket with the cherry blossoms is so beautiful The dessert and coffee
and the fruit are also delicious in a different way Across from Tendoso is the highly acclaimed “Tendoso Garden Cafe” We would like to go there after checking out,
but unfortunately it was not yet open But we did take home a whole eel in the eel rice bowl! The unaju was also of high quality! I would like to try the delicious food in a different season and stay in a different room. The staff were also very kind, and it was a wonderful inn that I would like to visit again. I will also visit the cafe at that time! Cherry blossoms at Kajo Park, Yamagata’s famous cherry blossom spot, were in full bloom. The best time to see them is usually early to mid-April. The 1,500 cherry trees are a sight to behold. You can also see the Yamagata Shinkansen and the cherry blossoms. The one-car train is also cute. If you’re looking for Yonezawa beef, try “Yonezawa Beef Tokiha Yamagata Branch,” a 15-minute walk from Kajo Park and near Yamagata Station. They have shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, grilled food, and steak. Nigiri is good for additional order. A place recommended all year round is Yamadera (Risshakuji). This place is known for famous phrase that Matsuo Basho wrote, “The quietness of the cicadas’ voices penetrating the rocks.” After climbing the 1,015 steps, a spectacular view awaits you, blowing away all your tiredness. The cherry blossoms in spring, the greenery in summer, the autumn leaves, and the snowy scenery in winter would be all beautiful.
