Where I’m going in Japan on my next trip!

My next Japan trip’s coming up! As always, I’ll be filming everything, so there’ll be lots of new Japan travel vlogs coming up every Thursday. This time I’m going to Tokyo (of course!), as well as central Japan. First I’m staying in Nagoya and doing a section of the Nakasendo Trail, then I’m moving to Takayama, a historic town in the mountains, in Gifu prefecture. Depending on the weather and how much time we have, we may go on day trips to Shirakawago and Gujo Hachiman, the water city. Then it’s on to Toyama for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a journey through the mountains of the Japanese alps. After that, we’re taking the shinkansen back to Tokyo. I’ve booked Gran Class, which is like first class on the shinkansen, even better than the Green Car! We may also do day trips from Tokyo to Atami for the beach, and/or Chichibu for the Nagatoro River Cruie. Stay tuned for lots of new videos – and keep an eye on my Instagram (cakeswithfaces) to see what we’re up to!

Oh wow I can't wait for your next trip! I haven't traveled around central Japan yet but seeing the old post towns and hiking part of the Nakasendo trail is absolutely on my list of things I wanna see. 🤩 Hope you share some inside on Our research of possible bear attacks and snakes. The wildlife is really what worries me about doing the hike hehe
The variety of themes and places put this channel on a higher level than other Japan guides.
I've been planning my trip for nearly 2 years, and I finally hit Tokyo in October.
This channel, your guide book and the card decks have made my planning both easier, and more exciting.
Good luck on your next trip, and we all look forward to your video highlights!
Hi Amy! This itinerary was almost my exact route I took last month. Shirakawa-go was very scenic, and I would recommend renting a car for more freedom/flexibility. We couldn't do the Kurobe Alpine Route because the tickets were oversold; there was bad weather in the days before our visit, and tourists from the previous days were prioritised to rebook. Here, conversely, it was easier to not drive as it would give you the flexibility to either take a one-way trip rather than return. However, driving through the mountain roads was very fun. Factor in a few extra days in case of bad weather for the Alpine route, Toyama is not too far away to fill in those extra days, and we had a great time there. Hope you'll have a lovely trip!
Have a great trip Amy 🚄✈️🎎❤
The best Italian restaurant I've ever been to in 60yrs including living in Italy is in Gifu. 山帰来
If you hike the Gifu castle bring lots of water!!! Lots
Amy I came across your channel almost two years ago when I first began planning my trip. I leave on Monday and I can’t believe it! I’m so incredibly nervous but also really excited. I’ll be visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Kinosaki Onsen, and Osaka.
Your videos and guidebook have been such a great resource so thank you❤
Exciting! I have not been to Nagoya yet, so I'm definitely looking forward to your video. And yes, we need more off the beaten track places lol. And a trip report on the Grand Class is always a must. Have an epic trip!
Hope you have an amazing time, am not going until October 2026. If i order your book this week will I get it before you go away?
Last time I went to Japan I went to a festival in Sawara which is just outside of tokyo (they have one in the summer and one in the fall). See if there are any fun festivals like that. I always find them so fun and interesting! Sawara has huge floats and lots of stalls. I'm not sure of your dates but looking for festivals might be fun.
We wanted to do that part of the Nakasendo trail and the alpine route when we were there this spring but could not fit them in. Next time! So I will love to see your videos on them.
We were considering the Shinhotaka ropeway as a day trip from Takayama but I couldn’t get over my fear of heights to do it.
gifu railbike, really cool, I went last week, so fun.
Looking forward to the new places and vlogs😄 I’ve finally booked the outbound leg with JAL in business using my avios. Im beyond happy that the pieces are beginning to fall in place finally 👍😄😄😄
can't wait for ur next trip !!, i really enjoy your videos and benefit lot for my trips as well
i have a Q regarding trains, my next trip will be with my 14 month old baby, should i buy him a ticket to enter the train ? i know that kids younger than 6 years dont require a ticket but can i just ride or i should go to a JR booth and get sort of paper for him ?
My family and I are going on our first trip to Japan and I am most excited to see the Ukai fishing in Gifu! Have you seen or heard about this?
My first trip was in 2003…we really have dated ourself. haha. I am so sad I can't do harajuku anymore. It's too busy now and the touts are fierce. My favorite places are the ones I discovered by accident without plan. Like I had to go do laundry in a different area where the coin laundry was. It was an amazing little town.
Been watching your videos for years now. We finally were able to go on our very first trip to Japan earlier this year. Your videos really helped us with planning and introducing us to lesser known places that we were able to incorporate into our trip. We visited the Kawazu Cherry Blossom festival in Izu, Kanazawa, and the four seasons bamboo forest in Utsunomiya. We LOVED them!! Please keep sharing those lesser known places! and hope you have another great trip 🙂
I'm sorry but why aren't you aging? You look the same as you were 15 years ago.
Luckily I had your videos (and others as well) to calm me down before our first trip to Japan in January 2023.
Always enjoy any content you make 😊. Hope you have a great trip !
Hope you have a great trip. I've just returned from a 3 week visit and found a few more shops, especially bakeries, aren't accepting cash anymore, card only (Suica Etc.), just something to watch out for. A few of my favourite bakeries in Tokyo have recently started doing this.
If you plan to get as far as Toyama, why not go to Kanazawa afterwards?
In your plan, Toyama looks just the end point of tateyama-kurobe alpine route where can take the hokuriku-shinkansen to back to Tokyo, rather than a trip destination. In other hand, as you know Kanazawa is a popular tourist city even for Japanese.
Amy I really love all your videos, whether a popular or non-popular destination! I personally prefer the non-popular locations as I love exploring off the beaten path and hidden gems 🙂 Thanks for all you do!
It sounds wonderful! You're going to a bunch of the places on my "Japan wish list". We'll be there again in about a year, but it's a budget trip, so probably sticking near Tokyo with day trips. We're saving up for a bigger trip in a few years and Gifu, Nagano and Toyama prefectures are on the list along with Nikko – or maybe we'll just wander around Shikoku! It's so fun to plan and explore. Look forward to seeing all your videos! BTW, I think Phil needs an honorary Cakes With Faces title for being your moral support. Maybe "VP of Gashapon Hunting".
Can’t wait to see what you think of Takayama; I loved it!
I really recommend, if you were never there, go to Kamikochi.
It's a full day trip from Takayama but it's breathtaking!
Also, you can expend a night at Hirayu Onsen and go to Kamikochi from there.
For me, the less known places are the best videos. Most of those are unique jewels to add on a Japan trip!
I never get tired of Tokyo, because it is a place that always changes. Buildings being torn down, new being built. Places shutting down, new popping up. And I really love the quiet, non-touristy places there.
Gotta love your admiration for Japan. Been to Japan twice and my 3rd visit will be in Nov this year. Out of curiosity, how many times per year do u visit Japan?
I visited Atami last year on a bright sunny day, perfect conditions. It's the only day of my trip I didn't like. I don't understand why Atami comes up so often. It's ugly, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Sounds exciting! Can’t wait for the vids ✨
We went to Gujo Hachiman and did a very nice bike tour around the village. Less touristy than Shirokawaga. Although we were there with the famous sake festival. Nakasendo trail is very beautiful to walk
I highly recommend Gujō-Hachiman. But it's become more touristy in recent years. The first time I was there, I was completely alone. No foreign tourists. Now you meet quite a few there. Last August, I was even able to swim in the river.
In Chichibu the Mitsumine Shrine is very nice decorated. A bit like Nikko.
I’m leaving for Tokyo in 12 days for my first ever trip to Japan, I bought your book literally minutes after I booked my trip last year!! I can’t believe this time in less than a fortnight I’ll finally be there!!!
Went to Takayama for the Sanno Matsuri in April – crowded because of the festival, but a really charming little city (like the Edo and Showa eras collided) and very friendly people. Thinking about going back for a couple of days in October
Glad your off to Takayama, I recommend Hida Folk Village and get a bicycle to get around. The Showa-kan museum is well worth a look and in the evening, if it’s still there the Red Hill Pub, Hisayo is a lovely woman, welcoming, good English, travelled in Europe.
I did the Tateyama Kurobe route on my first trip to Japan. We went in late October. It was a while back so I don't remember well, but I don't think it was too cold at the highest peak in Murodo. I think across the route the weather was quite moderate and the sun does warm you up at the peak as well. So bringing a hoodie or a light jacket will probably be enough, since if you are doing the route as a daytrip, you won't be spending much time at the summit anyway.
It was so exciting to see this video, since lots of these places are things I have been eyeing on for my upcoming trip. I have a few free days in my plan and have been thinking of Hida Furukawa and Gujo Hachiman as well! Can't wait to see what you pick and your experiences in those places.
As for recommendations, the highlight for me in Takayama was definitely the temple walk in the Teramachi area.
Remember watching your videos alot when i went on my Japan trip in 2023. Ive made a decision if im in my current job next year Im gonna quit my job and go over to Japan next Easter for the maximum 90 days, maybe a bit less. Itll be more temporarily living there to focus on life and my artwork than a holiday, but it would give me the oppurtunity to visit places without meticulous planning and a lot of rushing. Hope you have a lovely trip and i may have to watch your upcoming videos to give me some ideas
I love your videos about the lesser known places the best! Your videos have inspired my husband and I to go in 2023 for our honeymoon! And we recently got to go to the Sapporo Snow Festival and the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival this year. We both wore your cute scarfs when we were there! I'm looking forward to your videos and have an amazing trip ♥️♥️
Very excited for the new videos to come from this trip! When you do the Gran Class video can you do a small explanation on how to book it? I've rode Green Car 4 times and it's excellent but it'd be amazing to be able to book gran class during my next trip! Enjoy the upcoming trip!
Thanks as ever for another great video. I'm heading to Takayama today! I'll be off to Hida Furakawa tomorrow morning – that was set as an absolute must see in my itinerary. I'm told that the Showa Era museum is a cool visit too, along with the limestone caves (they do a combined pass that you can buy on the Hida Nohi bus center's site). It's been a great two weeks here so far and I've still 9 days to go with Takayama and Tokyo. Enjoy your trip when you're back over!
P.s. the shirt has been worn on every Bullet Train so far (I'm up to 5 so far and it'll be 6 by the end of the day).
pps. If I didn't say before, the shirt is absolutely awesome!
Thank you for telling us about places in Japan that aren't as well known to potential tourists. I definitely think for people who are planning their first and perhaps only Japan trip they aren't likely to get use out of it for planning, but at the very least it's a cool journey to see on video. That said, for people like me who have been to Japan twice and hope to go a lot more in the future, those same videos are a very valuable resource.
I would suggest a day in Ito. Its a beautiful place with almost no tourist at all.
The trips out to the less popular or touristy places are the best. I recently did a trip from Sapporo down to Tokyo stopping in a heap of small towns and some of the less touristy cities along the way and it was the best. Lots of interesting stuff to see and far fewer crowds – not to mention the Hard Offs are better! Can definitely recommend Shirakawa-go – I saw it covered in snow a couple of years ago and it was an amazing day trip.
Love, love, love your videos! Soooooo wish I was going to Japan with you! But I will get there one day. Do you book all your accommodations before you leave or book while there, on the fly??
