🇯🇵 Step inside MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Takayama ‘Ichika’ Machiya House — a private, renovated traditional Japanese house in the heart of Takayama City. Originally built during the Meiji Period (early 1900s), Ichika beautifully preserves its historical charm while offering refined modern comfort for a one-of-a-kind stay.
In This Video:
・Tour the renovated Ichika Machiya House, a traditional Japanese house near Takayama Station
・Learn about distinctive Takayama architecture, including ‘gobun nuri’ and ‘mushikomado’ windows
・Experience the craftsmanship of local artisans, from earthen plaster walls to a stunning hinoki wood bathtub
Ichika’s exterior showcases gobun nuri (white-painted beam ends) and mushikomado lattice windows — hallmarks of classic Takayama design. The first-floor walls are finished in traditional earthen plaster by a renowned local sakan shokunin (plaster craftsman), preserving techniques passed down through generations.
Step past the noren entrance curtains into a space where light and shadow dance across warm, dark wood interiors. Relax beneath the ‘tenmado’ ceiling windows, gather at an irori-inspired dining table reminiscent of Shirakawago homes, or unwind in a luxurious hinoki wood bathtub.
This spacious house features 3 bedrooms — 2 tatami rooms and 1 Western-style room with a king-size bed — perfect for families or small groups traveling together. Up to 6 guests can stay here.
