岩村城下町は、岐阜県恵那市岩村町にある八百年余年の歴史を持つ城下町。
岩村城は、日本三大山城の一つに数えられる。
その壮大な石垣や、霧が立ち込める幻想的な風景から「霧ヶ城」とも呼ばれている。
この岩村城の麓に広がる城下町は、江戸時代の面影を色濃く残す町並みが特徴だ。
全長約1.3kmの通りには、なまこ壁や格子戸のある商家が立ち並ぶ。
町家造りの旧問屋や商家では、当時の暮らしに触れることができる。
平成10年には、全国で48番目の「重要伝統的建造物群保存地区」として選定された。
岩村城下町は、城下町の町家地区として形成された町の形態と、近代の発展課程を伝える商家町として、特色ある歴史的景観を今に伝えている 。
名物のカステラや五平餅、かんから餅のお店や地酒の蔵元などが点在しているので、食べ歩きにも最適だ。
岩村城下町は、歴史的な背景と美しい町並み、そして地元の味覚が融合した魅力的な観光地だ。

Iwamura Castle Town, located in Iwamura-cho, Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, is a castle town with a history of more than 800 years.
Iwamura Castle is one of the three great mountain castles in Japan.
It is also called “Kirigajo” (misty castle) because of its magnificent stone walls and fantastic misty scenery.
The castle town spreading out at the foot of Iwamura Castle is characterized by a townscape that retains strong traces of the Edo period.
The 1.3-km-long street is lined with merchant houses with namako walls and lattice doors.
Visitors can get a taste of life in those days at the old wholesale stores and merchant houses built in the machiya style.
In 1998, the area was selected as the 48th “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings” in Japan.
Iwamura Castle Town has retained its distinctive historical landscape as a merchant town that conveys both the form of the town that was formed as the castle town’s townhouse district and the course of its modern development.
The area is dotted with stores selling the famous sponge cakes, gohei-mochi (rice cakes), and kankara-mochi (rice cakes), as well as breweries selling local sake, making it a great place for a food tour.
Iwamura Castle Town is an attractive tourist destination that combines historical background, beautiful townscape, and local delicacies.
This castle town is definitely worth a visit in combination with Iwamura Castle.
