Ashikaga Flower Park’s origins date back to the 1920s, when President Hayakawa’s father, a large landowner in Horikome-cho (now Asakura-cho), Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, planted a large wisteria tree in a corner of his garden. In 1968, the garden was renovated and Hayakawa Farm, the predecessor of Ashikaga Flower Park, was established so that people in the area could enjoy the large wisteria. The area around Hayakawa Farm was initially rural, but since then it has become urbanized, and in February 1996, four large wisteria trees were transplanted to the current location in order to improve the farm’s profitability. This transplant was the first successful case in Japan. This wisteria tree has been praised for its resemblance to the “Tree of Souls” that appears in the movie Avatar, and in January 2014, it was the only place in Japan to be selected by CNN as one of the “Top 10 Dream Travel Destinations Around the World in 2014.”
