冬の硫黄山(アトサヌプリ)/弟子屈町 Mt. IO-Zan(Atosanupuri) in winter/Teshikaga
硫黄山(アトサヌプリ)は、北海道弟子屈町にある標高512ｍの活火山である。アトサヌプリ火山群は活動度の低い「ランクC」の火山に指定されているが、火山噴火予知連絡会によって火山防災のために監視･観測体制の充実が必要な火山であり、気象庁により火山性微動や噴火に伴う空気の変動等を観測する地震計や空震計が設置されている。硫黄鉱山としては、1800年代後半、安田財閥による鉱山開発の意向と停滞していた北海道開拓、明治期の士族反乱(西南戦争等)の国事犯収容施設設置(集治監）などの思惑が結びつき開発された。そのことによって建設された鉄道などインフラの整備は、後の釧路地方開発の礎なっている。1890年頃には労働者の中で硫化水素中毒による死者が増加し労働環境が問題となったり、その後、集治監収容者による鉱山労働の中止、安田財閥の撤退などで長期間採掘が休止されていたがその後、野村財閥系となって1970年まで操業が続けられた。 閉山後は麓の川湯温泉と共に山岳地帯に多数ある噴気孔が観光名所になっている。
