HIROSHIMA & MIYAJIMA, JAPAN are two very different, but amazing Japanese cities that you MUST add to your Japan Itinerary. Hiroshima is known for its important but dark past, and Miyajima is known for… deer and a beautiful shrine. Balance is important! And they make for a great one-two in a trip to the Hiroshima Prefecture.

My college Japanese teacher was from Hiroshima. Her Mom passed away from cancer during my third year of study and I remember not being able to have classes that semester.
She also taught a class about the atomic bombing which I enrolled in. She was kind of annoyed when I told her that in the assigned course book, it mentioned that America would consider Japan a thorn in its side if it took control of Hawaii.
Barefoot Gen and Grave of the Fireflies are too really depressing animes about the bombing.

There's only one Japanese grocery store that I know of in Connecticut that has freshly made Osaka style okonomiyaki. I've been planning to check out Mitsuwa in New Jersey though. It would be like going back to Japan.
