The Azai Three Sisters (Azai Sanshiai) are the three daughters born to Azai Nagamasa, a warlord in the Sengoku period, and his wife Ichi. They were Chacha, Hatsu, and Go. They became wives (and concubines) of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kyogoku Takatsugu, and Tokugawa Hidetada, respectively. Born into a lineage as the niece of Oda Nobunaga, who promoted the unification of Japan, they experienced the downfall and fall of two Sengoku daimyo families and the death of their parents, and were subsequently deeply involved in the struggle for supremacy between the Toyotomi (Hashiba) and Tokugawa families over the country. For this reason, they are often spoken of as synonymous with women in the Sengoku period, along with their mother Ichi. In 1567 (Eiroku 10), Ichi was ordered by her brother Oda Nobunaga to marry Azai Nagamasa of Omi Province (present-day Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture), and three sisters were born to her. Eventually, Nagamasa and Nobunaga came into conflict, and in 1573 (Tensho 1), Odani Castle fell in the Battle of Odani Castle, Nagamasa committed seppuku, and Ichi and her three sisters were rescued by Fujikake Nagakatsu, a military commander from the Oda clan, and were entrusted to the Oda family, living in Oda Nobunaga’s Moriyama Castle.[1] After Nobunaga’s death, Ichi remarried Shibata Katsuie, a senior retainer of the Oda clan, and moved into Kitanosho Castle, but was defeated by Hashiba Hideyoshi in the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583 (Tensho 11), and Kitanosho Castle fell. It is said that Katsuie and Ichi committed suicide, and the three sisters were entrusted to Hideyoshi, but it is also said that it was Oda Nobukatsu, not Hideyoshi, who protected the three sisters. After that, the fates of the three sisters were divergent.
