年越の祓

大祓(おおはらえ)は日本人の伝統的な考え方に基づくもので、「常に清らかな気持ちで日々の生活にいそしむ」よう、自らの心身の穢れや災厄の原因となる諸々の罪・過ちを祓い清めることを目的としています。

この行事は、古事記や日本書紀に見られる伊邪那岐命(いざなぎのみこと)の禊祓(みそぎはらえ)を起源とし、宮中においても古くから行われてきました。
中世以降、各神社で年中行事の1つとして普及し、現在では多くの神社で毎年行われる恒例式となっています。
また、年に2度行われ、6月の大祓は夏越(なごし)の祓、12月の大祓は年越の祓とも呼ばれます。

大祓では、大祓詞(おおはらえことば)を唱え、人形(ひとがた)と呼ばれる人の形に切った白紙などを用いて身についた半年間の穢れを祓います。

New Year’s purification

The O-harae is based on traditional Japanese thinking and aims to purify one’s mind and body of impurities and various sins and mistakes that cause disasters so that one can “always live daily life with a pure mind.”

This event originated from the misogiharae ritual performed by Izanagi-no-Mikoto, which can be found in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and has been held at the Imperial Court since ancient times.
Since the Middle Ages, it has spread as an annual event at various shrines, and is now an annual tradition at many shrines.
It is also held twice a year, with the O-harae in June also known as the Nagoshi no Harae and the O-harae in December also known as the Toshigoe no Harae.

During the Great Purification, the Oharae Kotoba (Prayer for the Great Purification) is chanted and a doll, called a hitogata (doll), or something similar made of white paper cut into the shape of a person, is used to purify the body of any impurities that have accumulated over the past six months.
