The Oigawa River and Katsuo: A Vital Link Between Sea and Mountains
The KatsuoTrail: Exploring Yaizu, Shizuoka, Fujieda, Shimada, Kawane Honmachi in Shizuoka Prefecture

For this trip, we hiked the ‘Katsuo Trail,’ set to open next spring. This circular route begins in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and winds its way through Shizuoka City, Fujieda City, Shimada City, and Kawane Honmachi, at the southern edge of the Southern Alps. Spanning 200 km with an elevation gain of 6,300 meters, the trail follows the Oigawa River, a vital waterway that has long facilitated the exchange of culture, goods, and people between the towns along its banks. The ‘Katsuo Trail’ traces these historic connections, with Yaizu’s renowned Katsuo at its core. Along the way, visitors will not only uncover the region’s rich history and traditions but also immerse themselves in the unique climate shaped by the harmonious interaction of sea, mountains, and rivers.
