積丹半島から眺める海は、晴れていると青く澄んで見えて、その青さは「積丹ブルー」と呼ばれている。積丹半島の産業は主に漁業であるが、中でも「ウニ」が名産である。沿岸の海では「キタムラサキウニ」と「エゾバフンウニ」が多く生息しており、その2種類のウニが冬の間に緑色の海藻を新芽のうちに食べてしまい、海藻が少なく海底の岩だけが映し出されるため、青く見えると云われている。
The sea off the coast of the Shakotan Peninsula looks cobalt blue on clear days and is called “Shakotan Blue.” The sea urchins that live in the nearby waters eat the green seaweed when it first sprouts, so the water is not covered with seaweed and only rocks remain, making the seawater appear clear and blue.
