北海道の東部、根室市の北西に隣接する別海町の奥行地区(旧奥行臼)は古くから別海市街と別海海岸部、また根室市とを結ぶ交通の要所であった。奥行臼駅は1933年(昭和8年)12月1日に国鉄の駅として開業し、すでに1925年(大正14年)に開業していた別海村営軌道とも接続していた。別海村営軌道の風連線は昭和38年(1963年)には国鉄奥行臼駅から上風連小学校までの一部が開通し、翌年には役場上風連出張所までの延長工事が完了して地域住民の重要な交通手段として利用されていた。しかし自家用車の普及とともに利用客は減少し、昭和46年(1971年)3月に廃止されている。国鉄奥行臼駅もまた国鉄からJRに移行後の平成元年(1989年)4月30日、標津線廃止に伴い、廃駅となった。旧奥行臼駅逓所は、明治43年(1910年)10月に開設された。駅逓所とは、交通不便の地に駅舎と人馬等を備えて、人馬の継ぎ立てと宿泊、物資の逓送等に便宜を図るために設置されたもので、全国的には明治5年(1872年)に廃止されていたが、北海道では独自の駅逓制度として存続し、北海道の開拓と連動して発展を遂げて昭和5年(1930年)の廃止まで続けられていた。以後は昭和50年(1975年)まで旅館の建物として使用されていた。
The Okuyuki area of ​​Betsukai Town, Hokkaido, has long been a key transportation hub connecting the coastal areas of Betsukai Town with Nemuro City to the southeast. Okuyukiusu Station opened as a Japanese National Railways station on December 1, 1933, and closed on April 30, 1989. The Betsukai Village Tramway, which includes the Okuyukiusu stop on the Furen Line, opened in 1925 and operated until 1971. The “Okuyukiusuekiteisyo” continued to operate in this area, with poor transportation access, from 1910 to 1930, before the railway was opened, by providing horses, transporting goods, and providing lodging.
