淡路島 Awaji Island
淡路島（あわじしま）は、兵庫県に位置し、瀬戸内海の東部に浮かぶ島です。本州と四国を結ぶ交通の要所として知られ、特に明石海峡大橋と鳴門海峡の大鳴門橋が島を本州および四国と繋いでいます。島全体が兵庫県淡路市、洲本市、南あわじ市に分かれており、人口は約13万人ほどです。
淡路島は、古代の日本神話において重要な役割を果たし、『古事記』や『日本書紀』では、最初に創造された島とされています。このため、島には歴史的・文化的な価値が高い神社や寺院が数多く点在しています。中でも「伊弉諾神宮（いざなぎじんぐう）」は、神話の中心的な神であるイザナギノミコトが祭られている神社で、観光客にも人気があります。

Awaji Island is located in Hyogo Prefecture, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea, and serves as an important transportation hub connecting Honshu and Shikoku. The island is connected to Honshu by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and to Shikoku by the Great Naruto Bridge over the Naruto Strait. Awaji Island is divided into Awaji City, Sumoto City, and Minamiawaji City, with a population of around 130,000 people.
In ancient Japanese mythology, Awaji Island plays a significant role as the first island created by the gods, according to the “Kojiki” and “Nihon Shoki.” Because of this, the island is home to numerous historically and culturally important shrines and temples. One of the most notable is Izanagi Shrine, dedicated to Izanagi-no-Mikoto, a central deity in Japanese mythology, and a popular destination for tourists.
Awaji Island is also known for its natural beauty. The island’s central region features Awaji Island National Akashi Kaikyo Park and Awaji Yumebutai, where visitors can enjoy beautiful gardens and panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. In the southern part of the island, you can witness the impressive Naruto Whirlpools, especially during the spring tides when the whirlpools are most dynamic.
