松前城は1600年、松前義広が福山館（ふくやまだて）と呼ばれる陣屋を設置して、蝦夷地支配の拠点としたのが始まり。江戸時代末期に外国船到来に対する海防強化の為、松前藩が幕府に命じられて築城したのが松前城（正式には福山城）である。
1949年に天守が焼失したが1961年に復元された。
この城がある松前公園には約250種1万本を越える桜の木があり4月下旬から5月下旬にかけて次々と咲き続ける。
Matsumae Domain built Matsumae castle in 1600. A castle tower was destroyed by fire in 1949, but was restored in 1961.
Matsumae Park, where the castle is located, has more than 10,000 cherry trees of around 250 varieties, which bloom one after another from late April to late May.
