Replacing the ”Sacred Rope” at “Wedded Rocks” (Meoto-iwa), Japan

This video shows scenes from the “Ōshimenawa-hari” ceremony, which was held at Futami Okitama Shrine in Ise City, Japan on September 5th, 2026. This ceremony involves the replacement of the large sacred rope (“Ōshimenawa”) that connects the “Meoto-iwa”, two large rocks, known variously in English as “Wedded Rocks”, “Husband and Wife Rocks” or “Married Couple Rocks” In the Shinto religion, these two rocks represent the union of the creator deities, Izanagi and Izanami, but they also symbolize the union in marriage of a man and a woman.
