Welp its too late
i got a English setter myself and its a girl and she gets all sad when me and my brother leave and my uncle says that she whimpers
The English Setter is a hunting dog first and foremost. Beyond that, the breed is sweet, gentle, psychologically "soft", and a joy to own.
Sadly, I had to put my 5 year old orange belton down two weeks ago. He somehow ended up with cancer. One of the smartest, sweetest dogs i ever owned.
My family has had English Setters for the majority of my life. They are actually generally really good with cats.
They have incredibly strong scent/food drives and they will counter surf/get into food at much higher rates than most other dogs. It’s almost impossible to get them to not eat unsupervised food that’s been left out on a table regardless of how well they have been trained. Their hunting instincts are based around identifying and retrieving animals (they’re gun dogs) instead of doing the killing themselves (like terriers for killing rats).
When introduced to other animals properly they can be great interspecies friends with a lot of different animals. My YouTube channel is filled with videos of my Mom’s cats cuddling with her English Setters.
As for trainability, they are very intelligent but they are also very difficult to recall train. This is in large part due to their drive to constantly find and flush out birds from fields. Their gun dog instincts make them more difficult to train for daily dog life than other breeds. They’re wonderful once they’re trained but they’re very stubborn and free willed, they’re not for well suited for casual dog owners. They’re super affectionate and amazing with kids, that much is 100% true.
All True – But they are the absolute BEST Pet you will ever on!!!
I have two English setters and they are extremely gentle, intelligent, friendly, disciplined and playful but they have really strong hunting instincts so when they are in forest they will chase anything. I’m using them for hunting ducks and deer because of their sense of smell. I also have two cats and they get along well with one they even drink from one bowl and sleep together but they don’t like the second cat
Here bc I was bitten by one today. First time ever bitten by a dog.
Friend of a friend's house. I introduced my self with the back of my hand and he had a sniff – and then many more sniffs lol – petted him for a bit didn't seem to mind me touching him and passed by a short time later and stopped to pet him once again. Seemed fine and I didn't notice any tension in the body language or anything – although he was sitting – then boom, he latched onto my forearm.
Strange isn't it?
I call bull on that English Setter’s are good around cats!!!
I rescue setters in Montenegro where they are constantly getting dumped by horrible hunters
Question: does this breed have a tendency to wander off or roam??
this dog is for hunting not house, video is dumb
A relative showed orange beltons, and at one point, had nine of them. Over the course of their life I think they had a total of 15. None of them showed prey drive towards the cat.
Also, they come in three types (bench, field, llewellyn) with varying coat length (feathers) and jowls. They're really sweet dogs with a stubborn streak.
