The Schipperke goes by other names such as Spitzke, Spits, Spitske. This fearless and devoted dog breed is always willing to protects and guard its family from any potential danger.

Small sized and easy maintenance is what makes these dogs so attractive but their intelligence and curiosity are one of the several disadvantages of owning the Schipperke. Continue to watch this video to get a complete list of dog breed traits and facts about the Schipperke, to see if this is the perfect dog for you

In the 1880’s Schipperkes became a recognized breed, originating from Belgium. The Schipperkes were believed to be descendants of the Belgian Sheepdog. Unlike its predecessor who was created to be a herding dog, the Schipperkes was developed to be a small watch guard, and was often seen guarding boats that plied the canals between Brussels and Antwerp.

Little shepherd or Little captain may be the english translation of the word Schipperke, and either definition would do as they both describe the heritage of this breed.

Queen Marie Henriette made this dog popular after she saw one at a Brussel dog show in 1885. The popularity of the Schipperkes skyrocketed which eventually led to its importation into the United States in 1888.

  1. Beautiful dog. I wonder if my dog Lucky was part Schipperke as many people would suggest at dog parks. She looked very similar but had a white stripe on chest.

  2. Schipperkes are not limited to black. They can also be tan, cream and chocolate. Sadly I have heard that schipperkes in the United States which are not born black can be killed by their breeders as a perceived fault.

  3. I so much love this breed❤my schip just 1,5 year old and he makes me crazy(in the right way)😅

  4. I've had several dog breeds and I highly recommend this one. Our Schipperke was amazing. Never ran out of gas. Definitely an explorer. We had a 100ft rockery that was heavily planted. We came home one day and the entire thing was dug up and tunneled. Hahahaha. My parents were shocked and I laughed so hard I cried. Fearless & most loyal dog ever. Never had any problems and almost no vet bills. They shed, but nothing crazy if you brush them. Very social and smart. Great dogs for people that are active. One more thing, they are pretty fast for long distances so don't think catching them to go home at the dog park will be easy.

  5. My skip is 11 now and absolutely hates water since he was a pup 😂

  6. Sorry, but you're pronouncing it incorrectly. But you're probably just an AI voice anyway. I've had 2 of these dogs during the past 40 years. They both lived close to 18 years each. 2 things I learned were: They need to be the only dog in your house, and Schipperkes are the most remarkable dog I've ever owned, and at age 61, I've never not owned, or I should say been blessed by having, a dog in my life. High maintenance, yes. Worth it, yes. Favorite breed ever.

  7. I had 2 & I have 1 now My Sofia, Josephine & Lindzee, All the same personality & didn't like little kids. Sofia has champion bloodline. If you try to stick your hand in the window of the car, she will eat your fingers. Fireworks or thunder does not bother her. She's a good girl. It's Moist & meety & table scraps.

  8. I found my schipperke boy named Pepper in the pound when he was 5. Now 13 he has always been obedient and sweet. A quiet boy compared to my barky corgi boy named Simon. At 13 Pepper has little energy compared to when he was young partially due to arthritis. He's just a sweet boy. He graze eats and isn't overweight at all.

  9. I have had 3 Schips and this is mostly all true for my schips except for the high rate of shedding. It was noticeable with 2 but now that I only have one the shedding is minimal. Other than that everything else is true. Mine barked a little until I told them that it was ok and they eventually stopped barking at every little thing. My Pomeranian barked nonstop no matter what was going on and didn’t stop until she was ready to stop so I had a comparison. I can also resound that two walks a day is absolutely necessary to keep a skipper key from becoming bored and barking. Measuring the food is a must. I also weigh my dog once a month to make sure I’m on track.

  10. Hey, My dog died yesterday and I've been thinking of getting a Schipperke to fill my void, to love on so I'm not alone is this a good idea?

  11. I just adopted a dog and no one can figure out what kind of dog he is. He's definitely part Chihuahua, but the other parts are a mystery. A groomer told me about these dogs and after looking at pictures of a schipperchi I am almost convinced that he could be that breed. My dog's name means captain 😊 How fitting!

  12. Great info video but the breed name is pronounced “Skip-er-key”. The “sch” is pronounced like the sound of school=skool NOT shool 😊

  13. Guys, calm down. If the voice is pronouncing it wrong then it's probably AI. Artificial intelligence…Pretty common thing in most videos these days.

  14. I prolly would have never gotten this breed of doggie, but I found her alone as a pup wandering the road. For the longest time I did not understand why she had a mind of her own and why she was so hard to train since I’ve never had a dog before, but I don’t think I could get another breed even if I wanted. Having rocket for this past year has taught me more patience and love than I thought I could even have. Now that we spend time together all the time she is my little captain she listens when I say no, protects me from anything bad like German Shepard running up to us, intelligent, sweet, and sees me as her only person. I couldn’t ask for anything more in a dog and I thank the lord he gave me a doggie that matches me in every way even if she is as frustrating as me 😂❤

  15. My Schipperke ran off 2 German Shepherds. They got about 300 before they looked around and thought WTF was that, then turned and came after him. He escaped under a fence which slowed them down, lucky for him. I am about to get a new one, 2 actually, as I am too old for big dogs now and a Schip is the only small dog I will ever consider.

  16. My first dog was a Schipperke, she was named Candy… IDK 🤷🏻‍♀️ why I named her that, I was just 11 years old. She Was THE BEST! Yes, sometimes very difficult; but overall THE BEST!!! I didn’t like the leash she didn’t like the leash so we had a mutual agreement that she would stay within 15 feet of me and would stop and sit when she got to the end of the sidewalk when we needed to cross the street. RIP My Sweet Wonderful Friend

  17. Is it possible for a schipperke to have a tail? I don’t like dogs without tails. This could be the perfect dog for me…if it has a tail.

  18. My blonde schipperke would argue that black is the only color their coat comes in point….

  19. Имею пыпу четыре года)
    Немного глупый, но очень смешной)

  20. Enjoyed this! Had many small/ med size dogs, but adopted a 6 (or7) year old one. All I was looking for was an adult male. Well, I Love him! Really gets me out walking, and we "run" him in the house (treats with two people at each end of the house) Watch dog for sure, but so smart and attentive. He's super!

  21. These are incredible dogs, my Donnie actually "smiled" and all passersby young & old were drawn to him. Did anyone else experience random bursts of energy ie: running rapidly in circles and jumping off top of stairs and flying….? Also he would eat until he'd burst, it was really hard to control his weight.

  22. I disagree, donnie was the easiest pet i ever had, he was so low maintenance and a great car companion. The most demanding pet i ever had has been two pitbull pups. Oy vey!

  23. As an addendum to my comment below, wondering if anyone has any insight into this doggie. He is unlike any dog I have ever had in several ways so I'm wondering if it is just something with him from before I got him at 6 or 7 years old, or the breed. I've gotten to know him pretty well, and he loves his routine he has now with us. But he does not beg for treats ever, never follows one into the kitchen, and even though he eats his perfectly nice food (a mixture of senior kibble, dental kibble and canned "Blue 7 plus) he takes his time with it. Moves some of the large dental kibble to across the room…picks at it…walks away. Then, at some point one looks and he's eaten it all. Also, he has never gone into a dog bed at all, and is only comfortable sleeping overnight in his open door kennel. When we first got him he barked (watched?) throughout the night when in our bedroom. Sleeping by himself down in a room he spends most of his time in (us too) , seems to be the best for his overall sleeping. In the morning when we come down, he is so endearing. Not a peep, just outside for a walk, and then breakfast. So not one bark until after that routine. Thoughts?

  24. This needs to be updated. DNA has proven they are not related to Belian Sheepdogs. Also, although the only AKC showable color is black, they do come in black and tan, blonde, chocolate, blue and lavender

  25. Your piano music is unnecessary and way too loud. Please remake the video with no music so we can hear your information

  27. In my research, these beauties come in more than black. They also come in chocolate and cream. I had a baby girl named Wednesday since 2011, but now that she passed I’ve gotten 2 girls, Sundae and Butterscotch. Winnie and Sundae were/are black and Butters is cream. Sundae and Butters are sisters 2 years apart. ❤

  28. My schipperke is 15 years old! And you’re so right about the barking— it is SHRILL. She’s finally cooling it on the barking, but that’s because she’s hard of hearing now. She’s still the most affectionate curious little dog. They really are the best pets.
