In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Australian Cattle Dog that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: 30 to 50 pounds
Height: 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 – 15 years

The Australian Cattle Dog is a high-energy working dog. He is not a couch potato — we repeat: he is not a couch potato. He wants to be active and busy most of the time. His energy must be directed, or he’ll become bored and will resort to entertaining himself, usually by doing something you consider naughty, like digging in the trash or digging up your flower garden.

The Australian Cattle Dog is also highly devoted to his owner and family. He usually attaches himself closely to one person and bonds less closely with others. He’s often called a “Velcro” dog because he attaches so firmly; he likes to be in close physical contact with his chosen person all the time.

Because the Australian Cattle Dog was bred to herd, and herd with force, by biting, he is a mouthy dog. His instinct is to nip cattle, children, pets, cars, anything that moves. He has a strong tendency to bite, even in play. This tendency must be properly directed with socialization and training when he’s a puppy, or it can turn into dangerous behavior.

Another part of the breed’s instinct is his strong prey drive. He’s fascinated by squirrels, cats, and other small animals. If the Australian Cattle Dog is raised from puppyhood with other pets, including cats, he can be trusted to live peacefully with them in his home. He’s likely to consider those outside his household to be fair game, though. The Australian Cattle Dog is generally friendly, but he is protective of his family and home turf, and he tends to be wary of strangers.

There is a toughness about the Australian Cattle Dog — he had to be tough to handle the high temperatures, rough terrain, and long distances involved in his job on ranches — that makes him both highly tolerant of pain and intensely focused. He’ll keep working even when he’s injured. Owners must pay careful attention to this breed to make sure he stops working or competing if he gets hurt.

  1. You have used one of my video clips from one of my videos without my permission. Please take it out of your video

  2. Paul. God bless. A cattle dog will help you deal with this. So loyal & caring, looking at you for approval and affection. The dog will lift your spirit & carry you through it.

  3. This is the best video that's right this dog is 90% black and tan Kelpie look at it!

  4. I caught a guy starring at my male while I was doing some leash training, when he made eye contact he said , that dog is fast , isn’t he ! My response was very fast ! He grinned, and said , i looks like he could cover some ground .

  5. Mine is named Dixie, she's all white with black apots and black ears. I got her from a shelter and she had her tail cut off. She's such a sweet baby though

  6. I saw a red healer at Shake paw a couple months ago, was the cutest dog I ever seen
Until he bit my sleeve and wouldn’t let go, that’s when I knew I needed one 😭. Just didn’t adopt him in time

  7. We are currently fostering blue heelers and terrier mix. He's small but sooo sweet! We love him very much.

  8. I assume that the speed limit in a school zone is generally 25 mph everywhere, and I know penalties for speeding vary by locality.
But one time my Queensland Heeler was pulling me on my longboard past a school zone. The radar sign registered my 260 pound ass moving at 45 mph. I don’t think people realize how strong these dogs are.

On another note, I rescued my Heeler from the pound. She’s the best $27 I have ever spent

  9. Absolute bull the ACD
Has only two breeds dingo and Northumberland collie.
Any other breeds is a crossbreed, done by people that have absolutely no idea.
I'm a member of the cattledog and kelpie club of Queensland. I also have a registered ACD with ANKC ( Australian National Kennel Club) They have only DNA tested dogs.
USA need to learn from the people that have kept the breed pure.

  10. Good video, but you forgot to mention that they are not a casual breed. They NEED a lot of mental and physical stimulation. They train easily, but they're also really smart, so they're not as easy to train as something like a Lab or Retriever. They need owners who will work them and keep them active.

  11. I have a Blue healers named Kiba he's an energizer bunny but one of the best dogs ever . He's such a great companion and friend

  12. I've owned a pair of Heelers. Those two dogs would work stock together like their brains were synced. I had to put my female down because she got diabetes. My male, Dink, was 15 1/2 when he went totally blind and started loosing bodily functions. No way for a dog to live. Best dogs I ever had. Told my son that if I could put a dog down that I loved that much not to piss me off. Good dogs are hard to find, kids you can get anywhere.

  13. I have a 12 or 13 year old cattle dog. Any tips for me with him getting up there in age? He still likes to go for walks. Slight tick im his hip at times.

  14. These guys are fearless! Mine has been 4 years with only three legs. He lost one fighting off a coyote trying to attack my son. This is the best breed!

  15. I love Australian cattle dogs. We might get one because one of our dog’s died😢

  16. Love the breed and ours lived 17 yrs. Much older now can't do the lifestyle breed desereves. Have visited my boys ashes daily and call my new pup Havanese By his name, by mistake. I still love that guy bright spot in my life. If you can do the breed no regrets, big bite and protective.

  17. I rescued a 5 year old Cattle/ Doberman mix two weeks ago, a Christmas present for myself. I’ve had 4 labs and a Chihuahua , this guy is very smart, learning fast. He was abused and left outside. Timid, but slowly becoming a dog! Sweetest guy, already bonded to me, learning to overcoming a lot of anxiety. He loves people and other dogs. I live where wild horses are common , and they grab his attention walking by the house. Gonna be a great companion! Happy 2025!

  18. I have a 3/4 ACD and 1/4 Australian Shepherd mix. Wonderful beautiful little pup. Unlike her siblings, she stayed white — another though rare color to add to the list of ACD colors. She has a black eye patch and black ears and Dalmation like spots which turn Aussie brown on her feet.

  19. This breed sheds its coat profusely year round and I have never met one that didn't. If we don't sweep our floors daily we get tumbleweeds of my cattle dog's fur blowing around the house.

This is the second video I've seen that says they don't shed year round and that they only blow their coat once a year.
