カスパーと子猫たち
日本ではうだるような暑さが続いていますが、赤道直下にあるケニア、ナイロビの高地にある**Nairobi Feline Sanctuary（NFS）では、毛布が恋しい寒い日々が続いています。
そんな中、新たに保護されてきたのは、母猫「カスパー」と6匹の子猫たち。カスパーはもともと野良猫で、あるアパートのベランダで出産しました。飼うことができないながらも、心配して様子を見守っていた若い女性の住人の依頼より、NFSに保護されてきました。

保護されたカスパーの体は、ガリガリに痩せていましたが、彼女は、自分が産んだ4匹の赤ちゃん猫だけでなく、母親を亡くして行き場をなくしていた別の2匹の子猫まで、自分の子のように胸に抱き、一生懸命に育てていました。
生まれて数日の子猫、カスパーがいなかれば生き残るのはむずかしかったかも
特に、保護されたばかりの2匹は、まだ目も開かないほどの小さな命。ほんの数時間でも放っておかれたら、命が尽きてしまうような、かすかな体温と小さな声しかありません。そんな子猫たちにとって、母猫のぬくもりと母乳は、生きていくために必要なすべてです。
カスパーはこの子猫たちを自分の子猫として受け入れ、ガリガリに痩せた体で、たった一匹で6匹の赤ちゃん猫を育てています。その姿は、母猫の愛と強さであり、見ている私たちの胸を締めつけます。
NFSではこれまでも、代理母猫に育てられ、命をつないできた子猫たちがたくさんいます。
カスパーのような母猫たちが、安心して子育てできる場所があれば―救える命は、もっと、もっと増やせるはずです。
Story of Caspter and her Kittens
While Northern hemisphere continues to suffer from sweltering summer heat, the highlands of Kenya — where the Nairobi Feline Sanctuary (NFS) is located — are going through cold, blanket-worthy days.
In the midst of this chill, a mother cat and her six tiny kittens were recently rescued. The mother, now named Casper, had been living as a stray and gave birth on the balcony of an apartment building.

The young woman who lived there couldn’t keep the cats herself, but she cared enough to contact NFS and ask for help. Thanks to her, Casper and the kittens were brought to safety.
When she arrived, Casper was skin and bones — exhausted and malnourished. But despite her frail body, she was nursing not only the four kittens she gave birth to, but also two orphaned kittens that had no mother of their own.
A few days old kittens with eyes closed, without Casper, they may not have been survived.
She had taken in all six kittens as her own, holding them close and trying her best to keep them alive.
One mother cat, six tiny lives. The sight is both heartbreaking and deeply moving.
Two of the kittens were especially vulnerable — just days old, eyes still closed, their bodies too weak to survive even a few hours without warmth and mother’s milk.
For kittens this small, a mother’s presence — her body heat and milk — can mean the difference between life and death.
At NFS, many kittens have survived thanks to surrogate mother cats who stepped in just in time.
If we can build a space where mother cats like Casper can safely raise their young —
We can save so many more lives.
