It is great when opportunity presents itself to interact with other breeds, especially when they are well matched mentally. Today we were between events at RDDKC Rally Trials in Red Deer and stopped in for a little play date with some fabulous MBTs from Tiny Dancer Mini Bull Terriers. Meet Timmie (6 years), Lily (4 months) and her littermate Daisy (4 months). Usually Shazam (6 months) is the “Leader of Puppy Playtime” being a typical bossy Heeler however he does show a little healthy insecurity when he is not sure how to take his playmates exactly.
This is his first interaction with MBTs and Timmie has a lot of energy. While Shazam does show a little overwhelm, he manages to keep up pretty well and his body language suggests he is still having fun. When they are joined by Lily and we can see Shazam’s uncertainty of the situation escalates a little so Timmie is removed. Lily is quite clearly keen to play but Shazam shows a little bit of fatigue being already worn out by Timmie. Lastly Daisy joins him briefly to be part of the fun that she was watching at a distance but for Shazam’s sake we ended the playdate early while everyone was still having fun.
It is super important when we introduce dogs (especially when they are puppies) for the purposes of play that we watch everyone’s body language and intervene when necessary. When hackles raise, tails tuck and we see a whale eye, it was probably time to call it quits a few minutes ago already!
