The Whippet is a medium-sized dog breed that’s becoming increasingly popular among first-time dog owners. These dogs are known for their gentle and affectionate personalities, as well as their athletic and energetic nature. They make great companions for families or individuals who enjoy outdoor activities such as jogging or hiking, but they’re also content to cuddle up on the couch and relax with their owners. Whippets are easy to train and generally get along well with other dogs and pets. They have short, smooth coats that are easy to care for and come in a variety of colors.

  1. Yes, BUT PLEASE NOTE, these dogs are sighthounds. They have been specifically bred to be fast and have high prey drive. Any small animals are prey to these dogs. They WILL chase and they WILL NOT STOP. This is not a breed to have off leash or unsupervised around small animals.

  2. Also consider the fact that they aren't actually super energetic dogs…all they need is a big walk once a day and they will sleep for the rest of the time. They're absolute couch potatoes!

  3. Them they are gentle and patient with children videos in the background a kid getting trampled by a whippet

  4. I’ve never had a whippet but I had a whippet mix, she was named dory, my parents rescued her from a shelter when she was a senior dog, I had her for my entire life, sadly she’s passed on… she had kidney failure and the vets couldn’t do anything about it, she was suffering and in pain, we put her down, we couldn’t do anything to save her and she wouldn’t have lived much longer anyway… we didn’t want her to keep suffering, she was a amazing loving dog and I miss her 🙁 she lived to probably 17 years

  5. About the “bred to chase” this is why I hate that racing dogs is still a thing.

I’ve had a whippet since I was a kid; and the saddest thing to me is when dogs like greyhounds or whippets are put up for adoption because they are “retired” racing dogs, which btw they usually retire due to not being able to run from issues in their muscles/bones, so it’s depressing to see.

They are sweet ass dogs though! My oldest dog from my family is 11, and he’s still kicking and running around- I love when they do run-

  6. I have a Whippet, he's a little shit and chews everything but I love him

  7. Please stop saying its a great first dog!! They need training as much as any other dog, have separation anxiety and get hurt quite a bit due to running. There are copious cases of people getting them for content and after a while, leaving dogs for shelter because they have difficulty staying home alone. I'm am a responsible whippet owner and have a lot of experience w in the the breed. And there are way too many whippets being re-homed due to issues above

  8. The separation anxiety is a feature. So is the destructive phase. And the food stealing. You will never be alone in bed. Be it -30C or +30C outside.
