Deaf woman adopted a deaf dog | Rescue stories



Karlie, living with deafness, always yearned for a deaf canine companion. The moment she laid eyes on Rhett in the shelter, an instant connection was formed. He has become not just her closest friend, but also a constant presence trailing her every move. Although Rhett’s separation anxiety initially posed a challenge, the addition of another furry companion significantly alleviated the issue.

    Reminds me of one of my dogs, whrn I was in college. Have a deaf uncle, mute goddaughter, and was dating a deaf woman. So I trained the dog to verbal and sign commands. As she was a working, cattle, breed, collie, and golden mix, it worked well for working with her on the pasture, as she had better eyesight than hearing, and a visual locate drive.

    My ex, still a close friend, and I still train dogs to ASL, 30 years later. Her husband even trained his K9 oartner in it.
