Indonesia to pay 64bn won to secure KF-21 and continue industrial partnership.
JAKARTA – Indonesia and South Korea have agreed on the plan to deliver one prototype of the KF‑21 Boramae fighter jet to Jakarta, marking progress in a joint development programme that has been running for more than a decade.
According to defence-blog, the initial agreement was reached during technical‑level discussions in February, based on documents submitted by South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and cited by lawmaker Kang Dae‑sik.
Indonesia will receive the fifth single‑seat KF‑21 prototype, which has been used in various verification tests, including air‑to‑air refuelling. The package is valued at around 600 billion won, or approximately US$398 million, in line with Indonesia’s latest funding commitment to the project. This amount covers the aircraft price, development costs, and technical documentation.
Delivery will take place once Indonesia settles the remaining payment. The government has paid 536 billion won and aims to complete the outstanding 64 billion won by June, coinciding with the completion of the KF‑21 development phase.
The KF‑21 programme was launched by South Korea in 2015 to build a multirole supersonic fighter jet and strengthen the domestic aerospace industry. Indonesia joined as a partner under a cost‑sharing scheme that includes technology transfer and the delivery of one prototype.
The KF‑21 Boramae, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries, is a next‑generation twin‑engine fighter designed for modern combat missions and precision strike capabilities in later stages.
The prototype to be delivered has operational value as it has been used in key tests, including air‑to‑air refuelling capability.
The cooperation previously faced challenges due to Indonesia’s delayed payments. Both countries later agreed to adjust Indonesia’s contribution to 600 billion won, with a reduction in certain technology transfer components.
The plan to deliver the prototype signals that both nations intend to maintain their partnership ahead of the production phase. In addition, both sides have discussed the potential purchase of 16 production‑model KF‑21 units. If realised, this would mark the jet’s first export and strengthen South Korea’s position in the global defence market.
