［ワシントン ２４日 ロイター］ – ヘグセス米国防長官は２４日、米軍が１３日に開始したイラン港湾封鎖は世界規模に拡大しているとし、米海軍の許可なくホルムズ海峡を通過して世界のどこに向かっても航行できる船舶は存在しないと述べた。また、イランには米国と「良好な」合意を結ぶ機会はなお残されていると語った。
ヘグセス氏は米軍制服組トップのケイン統合参謀本部議長と共に国防総省で行った記者会見で、「ホルムズ海峡の通航は行われているが、イランが武装した小型高速艇で無責任な行動を取っているため、通航は誰もが望むよりもはるかに限定的で、リスクも高い」と指摘。イランがホルムズ海峡に機雷を敷設しようとするいかなる試みも停戦違反に当たると警告した。
その上で、米国はイランとの合意を「急いでいない」とし、米国にとって「時間はいくらでもある」と改めて表明。「イランは交渉の場で賢明な選択をするための窓口がまだ開かれていると理解している。イランがなすべきことは、検証可能な形で核兵器を放棄するだけだ」と語った。
ケイン氏は、米中央軍は引き続きイランの全港湾に対して厳格な封鎖を維持しているとし、２４日朝の時点で３４隻の船舶が通航を断念し引き返したと説明。米軍は太平洋とインド洋でもイラン船舶の拿捕（だほ）を継続するとし、「イランの港湾や領土に向かっているか、イランの港湾から出航するあらゆる国籍の船舶に対し、全面的な封鎖を実施している。封鎖命令が出された時点で封鎖区域外にあった船舶も厳重に追跡しており、対応する準備と態勢を整えている」と述べた。
