[ワシントン ２２日 ロイター] – トランプ米大統領による移民の強制送還を進める強硬な取り組みは、１１月の中間選挙で共和党の重荷となる可能性があることがロイター／イプソスの世論調査で明らかになった。
調査によると、強制送還に関するトランプ氏の方針に賛同する候補者を支持する可能性が低いとの回答は５２％に上り、そうした候補者を支持する可能性が高いとした４２％を大きく上回った。
この傾向は無党派層でより顕著で、５７％がトランプ氏のアプローチに反対する候補者を支持すると答えた。一方、トランプ氏をの方針支持する候補者を選ぶとしたのは３２％にとどまった。
トランプ氏の移民政策は当初、幅広い層から支持を得ていた。２０２５年１月の就任後数週間に実施されたロイター／イプソスの世論調査では、同氏の移民問題への取り組みを評価する回答が５０％に上った。しかし、覆面をつけた連邦捜査官の全米配備や、取り締まりに巻き込まれた米国市民２人の死亡を含む強硬な執行措置が１年以上続いた結果、最新の調査では支持が４０％に低下した。
調査は２０日まで６日間オンラインで行われ、全米の成人４５５７人から回答を得た。
デポーテーション・データ・プロジェクトが入手し、ロイターが分析した米移民・関税執行局（ＩＣＥ）の統計によると、ＩＣＥの逮捕者数は、３月初めに１日当たり１０００人強と、１２月の約１３００人から減少した。
調査の回答者のうち、７０％は取り締まりの緩和は前向きな変化になると答えた。
ただ、不法入国を阻止する政策への支持は根強く、国境の安全確保が少なくともある程度重要だとする回答は８４％、移民法の執行が重要だとする回答は８７％に上った。一方、職があり犯罪歴のない不法移民には合法的地位を得る道を認めるべきだと答えた人も７６％に達した。
