[オタワ １３日 ロイター] – カナダのカーニー首相率いる与党・自由党は１３日、２つの補欠選挙で勝利し、議会下院（定数３４３）の過半数を確保した。カーニー氏は過半数を得ることで、トランプ米政権の通商措置により効果的に対処することが可能になるとしていた。
自由党はＸへの投稿で、オンタリオ州の２つの補選で勝利したと明らかにした。同日行われた３つ目の補選はまだ集計が続いている。
この勝利により、自由党は下院で１７３議席を確保した。
カナダ政治を専門とするトロント大学のアンドルー・マクドゥガル助教授は「カーニー氏は野党の協力に頼ることなく法案を可決できるようになる」と述べた。
また、カーニー氏は少なくとも次回の総選挙が予定されている２０２９年まで政権を率いる立場を固めた。連邦政府が議会で過半数を握ったのは、１５─１９年のトルドー政権以来。
