[メキシコ市　１８日 ロイター] – カナダのカーニー首相とメキシコのシェインバウム大統領は１８日、メキシコ市で共同記者会見し、両国間の関係を一層深め、また米国とともに結んでいる自由貿易協定を強化する考えを表明した。

カーニー首相は「私もシェインバウム大統領も、北米地域の競争と競争力と強化するために必要な調整策をいくつか見いだせると十分確信している」と述べた。

メキシコとカナダは、それぞれ米国の最大および２番目の貿易相手国で、米国もまた両国にとって最大の貿易相手国だ。

カナダ首相のメキシコ訪問は８年ぶり。カナダ政府関係者は１７日、記者団に対して両国関係が「非常に良好」としながらも「さらに緊密になり得る」と述べた。

ある当局者は「首脳レベルでの交流はこれまで限られてきた。今回の訪問は、首脳レベルの交流を再確認する機会となる」と語った。

カーニー氏はカナダが米国とより有利な貿易合意をするためにメキシコを無視する可能性があるかと問われて「私たちはともに前進する」と述べた。シェインバウム氏は両国が敬意を持って協力を続けることに楽観的な見方を示した。

カナダ、メキシコ、米国は来年、米国・メキシコ・カナダ協定（ＵＳＭＣＡ）の見直しを予定している。
