KJ awarded RM2.5mil in Covid-19 defamation case

The High Court ordered Islamic preacher Mohd Rasyiq Mohd Alwi to pay former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin RM2.5 million in damages over defamatory statements made about Covid-19 vaccination during the height of the pandemic.

Judge Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan also awarded RM50,000 in costs to the former Rembau member of parliament.

Khairy initiated legal action in 2022, accusing Rasyiq — also known as Ustaz Abu Syafiq — of falsely alleging that he had misled the public regarding his vaccination status.

He argued that such accusations could have compromised the government’s efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The High Court was scheduled to deliver its ruling on Tuesday.

However, the court postponed this following the passing of former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Abdullah is Khairy’s father-in-law.
