Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.

The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances and is the longest running show in Broadway history.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score along with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life each night.

  1. Kinda sad this version doesn't have Eiji Akutagawa as the Phantom bc his rendition of Music of the Night was the first time I'd heard any JP version of Phantom (…somewhere. not here definitely, nope [whistles innocently]), but I will definitely be looking forward to sitting down and listening soon!

  5. incredible. i cried like i did the first time i ever saw the show

  9. Thank you so much for publishing the full version of the first performance in Japanese from the official channel.

We are very happy. I think it will probably please all the Phantom fans in Japan – the CD used to be sold, but it is no longer in print.

It seems to bring back the excitement of the first performance.

That beautiful chandelier goes up on the pitch-black stage, and the gorgeous, wonderful scene at the opera house unfolds. The scene where the Phantom's song is heard from behind the mirror, he appears and takes the heroine underground in a small boat was a truly exquisite production.

Japan is the third largest global market for musicals. Japanese actors rarely appear abroad. Therefore, even Masachika Ichimura, the best actor in Japan and twice awarded the Order of Merit by the Japanese Government, is not well known abroad. Only the most fanatical Phantom fans know about him…

Mr. Ichimura is a baritone singer, still before 40. It is extremely difficult to sing a song with many high notes like Phantom hundreds of times. I remember that he received a lot of guidance from the now deceased Mr. Harold Prince.

Besides, the Shiki Theatre Company, which was still small at the time, imported two foreign productions to Japan, Baron Lloyd-Webber's “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, with the company's survival in the balance.

It was a success and repeated long-run performances.

Mr. Ichimura's Phantom has a bit of a quirky voice, but his flamboyant, maniacal performance is wonderful. It is wonderful from start to finish, but the 'underground monster hideout' scene in the final act is fantastic. Here we see a double-layered, quintessential Japanese performance of 'true and false', something rarely seen in foreign actors. (I'm sorry I don't have a picture, but if I recall correctly, he has a small rounded back, limps and looks like he's about to explode with rage, but turns out to be a sad small old man.)

In the first place, the existence of the Phantom itself is a double structure. The 'ugly figure and beautiful music composer' is itself a double structure of the psyche. Lord Weber and Mr. Prince's point of view on this was a wonderful direction.

In "Make a choice", Mr. Ichimura puts his back into a performance that is anything but simple anger.

The role of the Phantom has been performed all over the world, surely by more than 50 great actors from different countries. Among them, there are probably no more than five actors who can perform the multiple layers of the spirit on their backs in this climactic scene. (I have seen about 30 of them in videos and on the actual stage, but very few. There were many actors who were acting one layer at a time, only expressing simple 'anger').

Mr. Ichimura has published a couple of books and said that he used the Noh play “Kurozuka” as inspiration for his performance as a reference for acting as a monster.

In “Kurozuka”, it's about an old “Oni” woman who kills and eats people in a lonely place. 'I don't want to kill people like that, but it's the only way to survive. Am I a human or an ogre?" Her mind wavers between human and demon.

“Oni” means almost the same as “Phantom” in English. It is the perfect image for the monster, who wavers between tender feelings for Christine and hatred of being shunned by the world.

Recalling an old interview with Mr. Keita Asari, who produced the Japanese version of the play, I realise how much heart and soul he put into this production. (I know how much he put into this production (and probably how hard he had to work financially too).

Old fans who have been to see the show many times will know that the Japanese lyrics have been slightly changed. The Japanese lyrics adopted by Mr. Asari are based on the original English lyrics, but with many old Japanese phrases. This is because the words are much more beautiful when sung in song.

From an English speaker's point of view, it is good to remember the 'archaic English' rhymes and beautiful phrases, for example, in the text of 'The Tales of King Arthur'. There is a story called 'The Pearl' in classical English, written by Sir. Tolkien in England, and Mr. Asari brought that kind of classical beauty to the Japanese version of 'The Phantom of the Opera'.

Jealous of his success, he was sometimes pointed at as a 'political merchant', but he imported musicals from England and built up the Shiki Theatre Company into the large company with seven theatres it is today. He also produced and directed many other masterpieces until his death at the age of 85.

The Shiki Theatre Company is very famous in the industry for the rigour of its training.

The prominent teacher had no problem receiving a number of medals for his achievements, but he turned them all down.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the official channel of the UK main family for distributing to the world the achievements of Mr. Ichimura and the other Japanese cast members, Mr. Asari and the staff of the time.

    Thank you very much.

We hope that “The Phantom of the Opera” will continue to be performed and loved around the world for many years to come.

  13. Although I can’t speak or understand Japanese the vocals and orchestrations are simply wonderful, much better than British cast recordings I have to say. Diolch am rhanu (Welsh for) Thank you for sharing

  15. To be honest, I'm not a fan of other Japanese singers' singing styles or songs. But this music is fully amazing and beautiful. The cast just did their best as the Phantom of the Opera cast.

  17. Nomura Ryoko's voice brings tears to my eyes, she sings so beautifully. A new treasure was released for Phantom fans. Thank you. 🖤
