I don't really see a piece of media being woke/progressive as an indication/cause of poor quality. People often seem to attribute bad writing in these types of stories to "forced wokeness" but I never really see the same logic applied to more centrist or conservative pieces of poorly written media. Not saying you can't critize or question the message of/intentions behind something, but it just seems weird to me how people tend to directly correlate those aspects with writing quality.
Me and the boys reacted to a episode and idk tbh. Safe to say its gonna be okay at best but my expectations were higher.
I literally went to sleep watching this. I was so disappointed in this man. Wow what a huge missed opportunity to showcase Yasuke's story and legacy. Like come on if you want magical powers and or robots then make a damn afro-futurism anime series with fictional characters. Yasuke should have been more grounded in reality, yet with over the top anime action similar to other historical fiction animes like Vinland Saga. LeSean Thomas dropped the ball again like he did with Canon Busters 🤦🏿♂️.
If I was the writer I would have focused on Yasuke's perspective of Japan and his asjustment and also motivations based on his past of becoming a Samurai and helping Nobunaga's cause woth ofcourse internal and external conflict hindering him and making him question his dedication and goals in life. Along with this Vinland Saga type of over the top action along with a deep political storyline linked to the real history of what happened 1 year before Nobunaga's death and Yasuke playing a part in being an obstacle against the antagonistic force after Nobunaga's head. Seriously this anime could have been a master piece in the making LeSean shouldn't try and write anymore animes he should stick to producing snd leaving the writing to others.
History: there is a really great story about an African samurai
Netflix: let's put Mechas, magic and monsters into that !
totally agree with your observations

And thinking that it could’ve been like vagabond or kingdom is a slap to the face and it would’ve been great if they just focused on his past…
1st thing I ever thumbs-downed on Netflix. Had to they were on probation for the Age of Samurai 'docu-series'. Netflix just need to quit. Leave Asian culture to another streaming service.
I was fine with the magic, but fuckin robots why
I'm always salty 🤣 I know but da 🐐 Lesean Thomas has founded a Kickstarter for his cannon buster after having funds he didn't give rewards to people and locked his Instagram account even e girls aren't that bad 😭
The point about an African being the craziest thing these people believe they ever saw is genius, I didn't even think about it 🤣🤣
