The worst part is when you kill smough first. You can hear ornstein make noises to react almost as if he’s upset about it. When you kill ornstein first smough dosent hesitate to finish the job and kill a twitching ornstein. He even laughs like he revels in it.
Another theory for Ornstein: Regarding Ornstein leaving his golden items at Dragon Peak, after Ornstein met with the Nameless King, he may have become a dragon friend as well. However, he has now lost faith in Gwyn and the Age of Fire, which may be why he left his golden items at Dragon Peak. He can continue his old duty of protecting the Princess/Cathedral. Now that he has accepted the Darkness and learned how to use it, he may be wearing a darker version of his old armor. The Heide area was most likely the place where the Princess resided for a time. This process may have served Ornstein in his reborn form, even after he abandoned Princess Heide, Ornstein may have chosen to continue his initial mission of protecting the abandoned cathedral, during which time he became hollow. Since he is now friendly with dragons, this explains why he did not eliminate the dragon in front of the Blue Cathedral. And all of this shows that he is the "Old Dragonslayer". This is the theory I believe in too.

In DS 3 when you kill the Devourer of Gods, Smough's armor set becomes purchasable by the shrine maiden. This is something that happens when a character dies.
So this makes people believe that Smough turned into the devourer himself. While it's possible Smough was eaten, I honestly think Smough returned after fully submitting into becoming a monster
I played dark sousl 1 for the first time and i didnt have a lot of trouble ith those 2. … only die 10 or 12 times (the way to grt that from solaire bonfire are harder then the boss) i just separeted them and defeated smough using nito greatsword and with super ornstein i hid his ligthining bebing the pillar and attack when he did a smaugh ligining jump
