  1. I watched like an hour of Damiani playing this on twitch, it's so hard to believe anyone (all my friends) talking about how great the combat is in these games god damn

  2. I am replaying the game purely for the story, with the Japanese dub… and let me tell you – DMW is still the stupidest idea for a Limit Break mechanic. A random element like that being in an action game is counter-productive to the entire point of player control over the situation. It is also nigh meaningless, seeing how basic items like ethers are capped at 99 and magic attacks have INSANE damage meaning you can deal with pretty much any enemy faster then DWM has any chance to trigger ! 😂

As for the story I found Angeal’s story arc to be messy. For a character who is supposed to be this intelligent mentor he let himself get comically hung up on the whole “I’m a monster” thing. So fucking what, you dum-dum ? Big deal. Just live on and keep being yourself, you egotistical fool, with your bullshit “honor” that eventually led you to attack and almost kill your apprentice just because you wanted him to kill you over you being a “monster”. Blaaah.

The Sephiroth arc is still pretty solid, though. Seeing a usually calm and collected ally fall to madness through the discovery of his purpose is still very memorable. I just wish there was more of him in key parts of the story. Sometimes he is JUST ABSENT for incredibly important events he himself would’ve wanted to be there for, but just isn’t.

  3. I've been watching Max streaming this remaster and it looks more fun than what i remember from played it on PSP. Zack new VA sounds kinda eh though. Maybe i'll get this remaster next year after i freed up some of my backlogs. Anyway good review EZA

  4. Great review Brad, and Isla that edit was great. Always good to hear Jones' smooth ass voice.

  5. I gave it a serious go and it was a letdown. They shouldn't have diverted staff and resources to this and instead work on fixing FF7-the remake that never was, or will be. Its rebranded to rebirth now. I dont even understand what went so very terribly wrong. From Demon Souls to that other game, so many good remakes are coming out and none of them have been botched to this degree. So i guess its safe to assume, it was never a remake but a different story all together in that world? Kinda like Dissida? Non canon cross overs?

  6. I’ve been playing this on Xbox Series X and I’m blown away by the quality. Looks amazing in 4K 60, feels good to play and the system is rewarding once some options like Materia Fusion open up. I don’t even mind the grindy side missions. First time with Crisis Core for me and I’m glad I finally get to experience the game.

  7. I'm really surprised they didn't touch on Zack's terrible new VA. He sounds so much worse compared to the original.

  8. Great job Brad! I can't believe you had to time to contribute this review, what with all the podcast work also being done.

  9. Nice to hear that Brandon Jones is still doing review voice overs 🙂

  10. Maybe I should have stuck with it for a bit more but personally I had to change to the Japanese dub after a while and things felt more natural.

  11. i still have psp black label version sealed. Guess I will sell that and play this now.

  12. The game was awesome and truthful or even better than the original but 1 thing i really disliked is the Voice Acting specifically caleb pierce work on this. Rick Gomez was way better delivering emotions and the charm that zack has at times it felt like caleb was just reading the lines.

  13. Pro tip: if you wanna minimize the random battles run along the walls worked back in the day and still works now 😉

  14. I wonder if the guys will get back together for the release of part 2. They're a big part of the remake hype for me.

  15. Amazing how much remake seems to take all of its character and level designs from Crisis Core.

  16. I really got hooked on the Materia Fusion system! Was hoping for some story additions after that "More than a Remake" trailer. I don't envy Brad having to rate this game though. It improved every aspect of the original game (except for Zack's VA imho) but the base game is a PSP game in design. Aside from the ending sequence of the story I think it takes away more from the FFVII world than adds to it. Genesis is awful. And Sephiroth's myth-like presence feels diminished when he's doing normal SOLDIER sheet. As long as they don't include Genesis in the remake series I'll be okay.

  17. I feel like it's unfair to rag on "stiff animations" when a lot of JRPG's especially the old FF games had those. The even had those on the PS2 so it's not a PSP hardware issue. They probably kept it to stay faithful to the original game

  18. Not sure about the point about graphics. It doesn't look nearly as good as VII remake, but maybe Brad meant it's the same artstyle.

  19. I thought Brandon Jones was all done with Easy Allies? Retired or focusing on his family etc?

  20. I think it'll be interesting for people who came in via FF7R to see a taste of what FF7 fans were eating with during the 2000s "Compilation". And even further back to see the stylistic whiplash if they play the OG FF7.

Back in 2008 I was just happy to be back in Midgar/Gaia but in fully 3D graphics that was neither a CG film nor a critically-meh shooter. CC was a good time, and being numb to KH-tier english dialogue helped in the long run haha. I am hoping Rebirth re-contextualizes and redeems certain elements of CC but with the more competent dialogue/presentation of FF7R.

  21. Hopefully you guys have a spoiler review including Maximillion dood. Those discussions get me even more hyped since people I know are not into ff7 like me 😂

  22. I was surprised that not more was said about the new VO work for the game. I know a lot of people have been pretty disappointed with in comparison to the original, but I was curious to know the Allies' thoughts on it. I suppose the thoughts are not too bad.

  23. Crisis Core crInge… Not as bad as Dirge of CrInge though… Still the combat in Crisis Core – Reunion feels WAY better.

  24. I skipped the entire game and went straight to the final cutscene, no way am I sitting through a full game of that awful dialogue. They also ruined Aerith's character in every piece of FF7 media after the OG game. No thanks, for me that will remain non existant.

  25. I miss Zack's old VA, yeah the psp version had cheesy lines but the voice acting was good enough and very memorable.

  26. Just a point of clarification. The battles aren’t “random”. It’s super easy to identify where they are.
